It’s pretty amusing that nowadays when Tito Ortiz says something outlandish about nearing a deal with Strikeforce that would include some sort of co-branded Punishment Fighting Championships event that Tito would operate and fight in, no one even bothers to report it. Because hey, he says things all the time and we’ve all learned our lessons about taking him seriously. I could count on my fingers the number of places that bothered to cover Tito’s claims above, and all of them came with a gigantic grain of salt. And now Ariel Helwani has the oh so shocking conclusion:

However, when Fanhouse contacted Strikeforce director of communications Mike Afromowitz Tuesday, he made it pretty clear that no agreement is in place with Ortiz.

“I don’t know anything about it,” Afromowitz said.

Afromowitz doesn’t strike me as the kind of person who would say one thing publicly while something completely different was going on behind the scenes. When he said that this was the first time he had ever heard of Strikeforce working with Punishment Fighting Championships, I genuinely believed him.

It’s funny that we now need our MMA reporters to individually guage the honesty levels of the promoters they’re talking to, but it’s much needed and I’m glad Ariel is doing it. Let’s see if he includes something like that next time he talks to Cohen and the gang from Affliction.
