Calling Nick Newell ‘that one armed MMA fighter’ isn’t really accurate – he does have both his arms. One just happens to end in a teensy tiny nub hand that would make even Michael Bisping go ‘Wow, that’s small!’ But calling him awesome is definitely accurate. I’ve watched every fight of his on Youtube and the dude is a stud. Not only does his lack of left fist not hamper his ability to kick people’s asses, he regularly uses his uniquely shaped appendage to choke the fuck out of people.

When asked back in August of last year if he thought Newell might make it into the UFC one day, Dana said “I never say never to anything. There are amazing people out there who have accomplished incredible things.” But then after UFC 155 he did just that:

“Never, no,” White said of the possibility. “It’s hard to fight here with two arms. It’s tough. There’s guys that we bring in that are considered top guys on The Ultimate Fighter that don’t ever really pan out and make it. Will the state of Nevada let him fight? Will the state of California let him fight? Would some of these bigger athletic commissions let him fight? Maybe he can get away with that in some of these other states. I don’t know, fighting with one arm is just craziness to me.”

Now Newell has responded. In an appearance on the MMA Hour, Newell lamented the fact that the whole ‘one hand thing’ continues to be what everyone fixates on rather than his fighting abilities.

“I’ve already been licensed in Nevada, so that’s not really an issue. At all,” Newell said. “It kinda disappoints me that someone that’s such a powerful figure in this sport feels that way or looks at me that way.”

“[The UFC] is where you can test yourself against the best guys in the world,” he said. “I want to see where I stand among the world’s elite fighters and I feel like I’ve earned my shot. Anyone else with my track record would be getting looked at, but it’s due to outside circumstances,” he lamented. [You could say it’s out of his hand. Get it? *foghorn* -FL]

“I don’t get discouraged too much about things like that. I’m not going anywhere in this sport. I’m good. A lot of those guys in the UFC, just because they’re in the UFC doesn’t mean they can beat me. I think I match up really well with a lot of people in there.

“[White] wants to talk about how he wants to give people equal opportunity – to women, to gay fighters and stuff like that. Well, I’d like my equal opportunity as well.”

Dana mentions the Ultimate Fighter and how lots of highly touted contestants have flamed out, as if that’s some sort of proof that Newell wouldn’t make it. I’d proposition that Newell beats most of the lightweights from TUF that are still in the UFC. Especially the ones from the Oz vs UK season. I mean, if the UFC is willing to give the handicapped dudes from those countries a chance, how can he deny Newell his? A few more wins and we’re going to have to start asking why Dana is TOTALLY RACIST towards one armed people.
