Last we heard of Nick Diaz, he’d broken up with his girlfriend and was angling for another fight. Dana White sounded happy to give one to him, and now we have confirmation from Cesar Gracie that there’s a fight on the table should Nick be interested enough to take it:
“As far as his fighting and everything. He’s been in Vegas, he just got back a couple of days ago. There is an offer on the table, that’s all I can say. It’s something everyone is looking at right now and discussing with him. Dana has offered him a fight. There is an offer on the table, I can’t say who it is, but it’s kind of neat I think. But no decision’s have been made for sure.”
Kind of neat, huh? That doesn’t sound like a descriptor one would use if he was going to be facing someone whose whole MO involves pinning Nick down and wrestlefucking him to a decision. Demian Maia is the only top five welterweight currently floating around without an opponent, and thus the most logical option. I’d consider a fight with Matt Brown to be ‘kind of neat’ too. But would the recently uber-choosy Nick agree to those?
If he’s serious about escaping the title contention ladder and becoming a moneyweight fighter perhaps we’ll get something REALLY neat. Nick Diaz vs Wanderlei Silva, anyone? Eugh, okay. Enough speculation about fights that are about as likely as Anderson Silva vs Georges St Pierre. We’ve got bad enough big fight blue balls as it is.
*UPDATE* Here’s what MMA Fighting learned while following up on this story:
“Nobody at the UFC talked to Gracie or anyone else that reps Nick,” White wrote via text message.
In response to a text message asking who the UFC offered Diaz, Gracie told MMAFighting.com Wednesday night, “Can’t tell you.”
The miscommunications continue as apparently no one can tell a story about Nick Diaz without someone else denying it happened.
