I’m still pretty on the fence regarding this whole Fallon Fox fighting thing. But as far as I’m concerned, her status as ‘transgendered’ need only be discussed in the context of whether it gives her an unfair advantage in a dangerous sport. Past that, I consider her to be a woman and a normal human being who deserves to be treated with respect and common decency. Matt Mitrione takes a slightly less enlightened view on the subject:
“Maybe instead of being ‘the Queen of Swords,’ Fallon Fox should consider being “The King of the Buffalos,” he said.
“He’s chromosomally a man. He had a gender change, not a sex change. He’s still a man. He was a man for 31 years. Thirty-one years. That’s a couple years younger than I am. He’s a man. Six years of taking performance de-hancing drugs, you think is going to change all that? That’s ridiculous.
“That is a lying, sick, sociopathic, disgusting freak,” he continued. “And I mean that. Because you lied on your license to beat up women. That’s disgusting. You should be embarrassed yourself. And the fact that Florida licensed him because California licensed him or whoever the hell did it, it’s an embarrassment to us as fighters, as a sport, and we all should protest that. The woman that’s fighting him, props to you. I hope you beat his ass, and I hope he gets blackballed and never fights again, because that’s disgusting and I’m appalled by that.”
And we were doing so well with the ‘No blatant bigotry’ thing up until now! Really, considering the circumstances, I think most of us have been pretty open minded about the whole situation. But Mitrione went past voicing an argument against Fox being allowed to fight other females with the whole ‘sick, sociopathic, disgusting freak’ thing, and the UFC quickly responded:
“The UFC was appalled by the transphobic comments made by heavyweight Matt Mitrione today in an interview on the ‘MMA Hour.’
“The organization finds Mr. Mitrione’s comments offensive and wholly unacceptable and — as a direct result of this significant breach of the UFC’s code of conduct – Mr. Mitrione’s UFC contract has been suspended and the incident is being investigated.
“The UFC is a friend and ally of the LGBT community, and expects and requires all 450 of its athletes to treat others with dignity and respect.”
This has led to a lot of people siding with Matt Mitrione – one of the biggest huffs was over the UFC’s labeling of his behavior as ‘transphobic.’ OH LOOK AT THE NEW PC TERM WE GOTTA PUT UP WITH NOW. THIS FUCKING IMAGINARY BULLSHIT LABEL THEY’RE USING TO KEEP US FROM SPEAKING OUR MINDS. Look, jackasses. Just because you’ve never heard of it before doesn’t mean it isn’t very real and very serious. Trans people are one of the highest at risk groups on earth, suffering extremely high rates of harassment, physical assault, sexual violence, MURDER, and discrimination. Outed transgenders often lose their jobs, are evicted from their homes, and are denied service at stores, restaurants, and government institutions. All because prejudiced ignoramuses like Matt Mitrione consider them mentally unstable deviants.
It’s one thing to misunderstand Fox or any transgendered’s motivations to go through the years of surgery and hormonal therapy required for gender reassignment. Transgender issues are new to many of us and few have any insight at all on what it’s like knowing in your core that you were born into the wrong gender. But when you declare transgendered people ‘disgusting freaks’ you cross the line from uneducated to intolerant. You become a bigot spouting hate and my opinion is you deserve whatever punishment your employer doles out for voicing your moron opinions in public. Mitrione should consider himself lucky he wasn’t straight up fired.
At this point it’s easy to stand up for gay rights. Standing up for the rights of transgendered people takes a bit more sack, and I’m glad the UFC has shown they’re willing to do it.
