Koscheck was looking for a rematch with Chris Leben

Before jumping at the chance to retire Matt Hughes, Josh Koscheck was being all mysterious about the possibility of going up to 185 pounds for some awesome fights ‘for the fans’. So who was he talking about?

“St-Pierre, I’m not going to fight him any time soon,” Koscheck said. “All the top guys were tied up. So I thought, ‘What’s going to give me some motivation to train hard and get in the gym?’ And I was like, ‘Man, I need to find a big fight.’ So we were asking for a number of fighters in the 185-pound division. Chris Leben was one of the guys that we asked for, and Wanderlei Silva was the second guy.

“Nothing against those guys – they’re good fighters – I just thought it would be fun for the fans and give me some motivation to train.”

Chris Leben would be a great fight since they have all that history together. Koscheck and Bobby Southworth tortured Chris through the first season of the Ultimate Fighter, and while he’s probably worked through a lot of those fatherless bastard issues with a psychiatrist, I’m sure a rematch with Kos would be therapeutic. Or send him back into a spiral of alcoholism and destruction. Whatever. Either way, fun fight!

I would have enjoyed seeing Leben KO Douchcheck.

  • frickshun says:

Damn, I too would have liked to see that.

  • scissors61 says:

Why ask for a rematch of a fight you won? Of all the lame moves Koscheck has pulled this is…nah, it’s not even close to the worst.

  • kwagnuth says:

Fuckin Kos seems to want to fight over the hill ledgends who are ready to retire. I don’t know if he thinks beating Hughes and Wand when they are so far past their prime is good for his carreer but he just comes off like a vulture. I will laugh if Hughes chokes him out.

^ Like when he took to smashing nobodies like Yoshida and Paulo Thiago… except Thiago knocked him out, so he learned that it’s not worth the risk.  So now he’s trying to prey on fading dudes that still have big name recognition.

  • Mixed Martial Adam says:

Leben is  alot bigger than Koscheck and probably had a good chance of winning if Kos was silly enough to stand with him. However, the fight would have been a lose-lose situation for Chris as he’s a ranked MW contender and Koscheck was just looking for a novelty match. Beating him wouldn’t send Leben up the ladder and losing to Kos would have pushed Leben down to the bottom.

  • Danjo says:

    I like Leben.

  • G Funk says:

While I dislike Koscheck. I find it amazing that now peeps like Leben. Go rewatch the first season and tell me he didn’t deserve what came to him during the show. Leben is an asstard.

  • Reverend Clint says:

i always sided with leben even after rewatching the season… he was one ofthe things about that show that made it work. KOS and southworth were assholes

  • CAP says:

^til his next DWI. He’s about due for another.

  • agentsmith says:

How do you know the size of Kos’s mortgage?

  • Mixed Martial Adam says:

^^I agree. Southworth and Koscheck were beyond pricks to Chris and went out of their way to pick on him. Kos acted the same way years later while coaching against GSP and the dude was 32 at the time.

Sure Leben was an immature, emotional train-wreck in season one – but he was also 24 at the time and was clearly dealing with some major personal issues. He has matured immensely during that time and is now a pretty damn good fighter and a much more stable individual. Koscheck hasn’t matured at all and is still a prick.

I would say 2011 Leben is currently more stable AND a better fighter than the season one winner, Diego Sanchez. Plus, he is one of the few fighters that is set up financially outside of fighting as he has a very successful gym in Hawaii and a modest style of living. Diego has massive debt and a recent string of losses, Koscheck has a 3 miilion dollar mortgage, a busted up eye socket and needs to fight to pay his bills. I’d say Chris is looking pretty good these days all around.

  • Mixed Martial Adam says:

After coaching TUF it was posted here and on a few other sites that Kos bought a 3 million dollar mansion in California. I remember jake and ryan discussing it as well on the Low Blow.

I’ll try to find the article.

He also bought a ferrarri around the same time

  • agentsmith says:

Haha, just confirms my impression that Kos is none too bright.  He’s the stereotypical athlete that’ll end up flat broke and owing back-taxes a couple years after his career’s over.

  • CAP says:

    It pays to be hated!

  • G Funk says:

Agent, actually it’s his black half fucking chit up for him.

  • lukustra says:

am I the lone Kos fan in the world?

  • frickshun says:

  • Danjo says:

    I’ve always liked Leben, motherfucker.

  • DJ ThunderElbows says:

Are you gusy kidding?  Haven’t you heard how hot to deff his MAR clothing line is?  He’s making BANK.  I see that logo EVERYNOWHERE.
