Andre Galvao submitting Pablo Popovitch via toehold to take the Gold in the Absolute Division.

I’m not some super grappling guru, so I’m not likely to fully appreciate the finer points of hand fighting, or smothering positional dominance, or a 5 minute war to pass guard.  I like the flashy shit.  Scrambles, takedowns, sweeps/reversals, submission attempts…  With that in mind, here are some of my favorite moments from the 2011 ADCC World Championships.

The Run of Rousimar Palhares

Palhares vs. Schon – -88kg Round 1

Palhares wins by submission – Heel Hook

LOOK AT THE HEIGHT ON THAT SLAM.  He crotch-lifts Schon like he’s nothing and sends the poor man hurtling down to Earth like a pasty white meteor.  A few moments later Paul did as Paul does and quickly ended the match with a sweet heel hook.

~~more jitziness after the break~~

Palhares vs. Avellan – -88kg Round 2

Palhares wins by submission – Heel Hook

No, this is not the winning submission.  They spin out of bounds and the ref is trying to restart them on the mat, but Paul doesn’t seem to understand and keeps torquing (sound familiar?).  For some reason this seems to piss Avellan off.

They’re restarted in the center of the mat in heel hook position, and from go, Palhares twists the everliving shit out of Avellan’s leg, making him tap immediately.  From his grimace of pain (and the way he hobbles off the mat) he appears to have a nasty ouchie.  Avellan posted a funny vid on YouTube where he tells his side of the story.  He says his knee “ripped and popped like 5 or 6 times” and that if he knew what he knows now, he would have just given up instead of restarting.  They also talk about Palhares clubbing him (an issue that will come up again for Paul) and wonder whether or not he’s actually retarded.

Toquinho reverses Avellan’s knee tap.  That’s serious horsepower.

Palhares vs. Lovato Jr. – -88kg Semifinals

Palhares wins by submission – Heel Hook

Palhares vs. Galvao – -88kg FINALS

Galvao wins on points, gets the Gold.

This was an awesome match.

Palhares plays rough, if you didn’t already know.  Lots of scrambles and takedowns, and lots of questionably legal slapping.  I think there was some controversy about Palhares bending back Galvao’s fingers to break his grip as well.  Galvao plays rough right back, and Palhares ends up losing a point (I think) for the continued slapping.  Toquinho does a lot of power moves,  and he starts to fade a bit as the match goes on.  Galvao is a fucking beast that never gets tired.  At the end it’s all smiles and good-hearted slaps between the two.  Galvao gets his first Gold at ADCC (later to get Gold in the Absolutes as well), and Palhares gets the Silver in his first foray at the ADCC Finals (Visa issues and injuries had prevented him from competing til now).

Mmmmm… Kyra Gracie

Kyra Gracie vs. Sara Svennson –  -60kg Round 1

Gracie wins via submission, Armbar

Kyra has dirty filthy nasty omoplatas.

Kyra Gracie vs. Takayo Hashi – -60kg Round 2

Gracie wins on points

As I said above.

Kyra Gracie vs. Michelle Nicolini – -60kg FINALS

Gracie wins via submission, Omoplata

This was a WAR, and one of the most technical battles of the entire competition.  I don’t know what the points were, but up until the finish I had Nicolini winning the match.  Gracie wins her 3rd ADCC Championship.
