Why so meh about Gina Carano’s return?

Perhaps the biggest news coming out of Strikeforce’s HW Grand Prix (other than Fedor being done, of course) is the return of Gina Carano. But for some reason, people don’t seem all that excited. Ben Fowlkes gets to the bottom of it:

Let me get this straight: Strikeforce is excited to tell us that Gina Carano – the “face of women’s MMA” – is coming back to the world of pugilism, so they conduct a brief stand-up interview in front of the cage in which no date, opponent, or details are given? Exactly what was that supposed to accomplish? Carano did her giggly girl-next-door act, tossing out one-word answers about her movie career and blushing her way through a series of inane questions, and in the end we learned nothing that we didn’t already know. Carano is coming back… eventually… against someone. Feeling pumped yet?

Before continuing, I do have to give some props to Strikeforce for remembering to promote stuff during this event. While there’s still no location for the next set of quarterfinals, at least they did a Gina announcement.

But Ben is right – it came with absolutely no details whatsoever about her return. And we know she’s been training for all of a week now. Hard to get excited from that. In the end though, I’ll take it … we all had serious doubts about Gina’s return and now she’s shown up at an event and said she wants to fight again. I’m sure serious the hype will start when she gets a weightclass / opponent or some new pictures with epic rackage come out.

So she had a free coupon for an introductory cardio-kickboxing class. I don’t call it training til she’s sparring again.

  • Billytk says:

Yeah when/if she gets back in shape maybe I’ll get interested but for right now I don’t see this as news

  • malonth says:

Gina is probably learning like Roger Huerta and Frank Shamrock before him, did that it is not so easy to make it in acting. Gina is very pretty for wmma. But in Hollywood she is no more than a 4 or at most 5. Unless a fighter has a built in fan base, a la Quentin Jackson, there will be no movie work.

I still thing Gina is done in fighting. This was just a please don’t forget me fans.

  • Razzle says:

She looked like she ate the sun.

  • FiveBoltMain says:

She’ll fight in the summer when her movie comes out. They’ll give her a can so she can win and still be able to promote her movie. Can’t have her going around the world promoting a movie with a busted face.

  • glassjawsh says:

hope she quits mma, then gets spat out the bottom of the movie industry, then maybe we’ll finally see some boobage

  • CAP says:

^You just gotta get a good seat at weigh ins. She’ll have to strip down and not make weight.

  • Symbul says:

So she might fight again. Okay. Moving on.

  • Catfish says:

The real question is, if they did a promo about how Kimbo Slice is making his big comeback, would people care more or less than they do about Gina’s return?
She fights in a really bad division and has no chance of beating the division’s champion. What do we really have to look forward to other than her receiving another black eye? I was hoping she’d stay away.

  • agentsmith says:

I don’t care about her coming back because it’s obvious she was a paper champion, and in the 18 months she’s been gone, Strikeforce has actually put together a halfway decent womens roster.  She already got smashed by the 145-lb champ, and even if she can get down to 135 (which is doubtful to begin with), the likes of Marloes Coenen, Sarah Kaufman, and Miesha Tate are waiting for her.

  • Omomatta says:

Clearly someone’s gotta pay Cope’s tanning salon bills.

  • Take It Easy says:

Why is Strikeforce bringing Kim Couture back again?

  • glassjawsh says:

gina carano vs miesha tate would lead to a great deal of friction burns

  • Komodo says:

    Preach it, glass.

  • Blackula Jonez says:

Nice one glass, but real talk Gina inhabits the same role as Herschel Walker or Cung Le in that she is a fighter who can garner a ton of publicity but will not contend for titles or fight top ranked opponents on a consistant basis.

That why the reaction is meh. But since she is attractive some people will be compelled to give a shit about her as she strings you along to her next film project whilst fighting blown up 135’ers to remind everyone how much of a bad ass fighter she used to be.

  • Roxy says:

Yeah, some people are excited… but we don’t know details!

  • iamphoenix says:

i remember when i wore a leather jacket.
