Who is next for Anderson Silva?

(If only…)

It’s about that time of the month where we start talking about Anderson Silva’s next opponent and of course it isn’t a simple situation where we say “Yup, it’s Georges St Pierre in May.” Instead, it’s a total clusterfuck made even more clusterfucky by Michael Bisping’s reliable as clockwork choking. So who’s left now that he’s out of the picture? How about Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold? Anderson Silva’s management seems to like that idea:

Speaking to Brazil’s SporTV, Anderson Silva’s manager Jorge Guimaraes said that in the wake of Michael Bisping’s loss, his client would like to fight Strikeforce champion Luke Rockhold for his next title defense, explaining, “It would be champion against champion. It’s a good fight to promote.”

I’m sure Luke Rockhold is pretty shocked by this development. Considering the hissy fit Anderson’s camp throws every time some guy named Chris Wiedman asks for a shit, you’d think Rockhold would be at the back of the list. Rockhold himself thought he was back of the list, so much so that his management was asking for a pretty modest bout against middle of the pack Costa Phillipou. Unfortunately for him…

Earlier this week, during his usual post-fight press conference media scrum, White made it known that Belfort and Rockhold are in the works to face each other in 2013. “We have a fight for Vitor,” White said. “I think it’s Rockhold. That’s what we’re talking about.”

So who else is there? Let’s ask Anderson’s manager Ed Soares:

“When I think about it, like the only thing that comes to mind and I don’t even know if that would be a possible fight is, you know, like Cung Le is coming off of three wins or something like that where he’s got a little bit of a name, but I mean it’s really hard in that division because it’s so evenly matched all the opponents on any given day one of those guys can beat each other, so you know, once again whoever the UFC decides, we’re in.”

Cung is totally coo with that:

“If the UFC wants the fight, then, you know, after our discussion, I am totally open for it,” said Le on The MMA Hour. “I didn’t do any campaigning. My name got thrown in the mix and I’m honored, so whatever happens from here is going to be up to Anderson and up to the UFC.”

But Dana, not so much:

“This is typical Anderson Silva-Ed Soares craziness. Every (expletive) time there’s a fight. He wants to fight (Demetrious) ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson, then he wants to (expletive) fight this guy and that guy. This is always the same deal, it always happens. ‘I absolutely will not fight Chael Sonnen, he doesn’t deserve the title and I’m not doing this and I’m not doing that.’ This is what we do. We’re waiting on something, we’ll see if this pans out. When we’re ready to announce it, we’ll announce it. He will defend his title; it won’t be a super fight.”

So who will it be??? Dana won’t say right now, but one thing he’d like to make clear: no one is off the table, not even Chad Weidmand or whoever that guy is:

“I actually thought that Weidman was going to be out a lot longer than he was because of his injury, but he’s claiming he’ll be ready to start training again in a couple of months. We’re looking at a couple of different options right now, some options that we like, and Weidman is one of them.”

Stay tuned for another two to three weeks of speculation and public jockeying from all interested parties. And then probably another James Irvin or Stephan Bonnar of an opponent. Or not? I dunno, things have been working out for the UFC so far in 2013. Maybe they’re going to magically stop organizing stupid pointless fights!

let andy fight whoever he wants. he doesn’t owe weidman shit. weidman only beat an overrated munoz and maia. rockhold beating jacare is equally impressive.

I love how Dana is so straight up about the crazy shit he hears from Andy & what a game of financial chicken it is.

  • Voice of Reason says:

Probably Vitor, Weidman or Rockhold. Another gimme title fight. Andy really only had 2 REAL fights in the UFC, against Hendo and Sonnen. The rest are gimme fights. Yes I know ur gonna say Vitor and a few others were legit… but the only legit fights are ones where the opponent poses a real threat…. and Franklin, Vitor, whoever, they didn’t pose a real threat (read: wrestling).
