We’re back where we started.

You’d imagine with all of the hard work the UFC has done to repair their shitty heavyweight division over the past year, they’d have a better bout for #1 contender than Brandon Vera vs Tim Sylvia. However, the guys at MMAJunkie normally won’t give you their opinion on the fucking weather, but they ARE saying that’s what it looks like:

Current champ Couture will likely return to action Feb. 2 for a SuperBowl weekend card in Las Vegas. There’s been speculation that he would face Fedor Emelianenko, but the PRIDE heavyweight champion seems to be in no hurry to sign with the UFC. And, as of now, no Plan B has been mentioned.

Additionally, a bout between top contenders Cheick Kongo and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira has been pushed back until early 2008, so the fight’s winner wouldn’t be ready for Couture in February.

As for other possible opponents, a rematch with Gabriel Gonzaga seems unlikely, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic has lost two in a row (and reportedly isn’t returning phone calls from the UFC), Andrei Arlovski still hasn’t gotten a new deal (and would probably need a tune-up fight anyway), and Fabricio Werdum seems to have fallen off the face of the earth since a lackluster loss to Arlovski in April.

Okay, so lets ignore for the moment that I’m about two days behind on the news and that Couture has quit the UFC. It doesn’t really change the fact that all the dudes the UFC brought in to pad the weight class have fucked things up a la Three Stooges. Mirko’s had two chances to get himself into the title running, and the UFC is pacing Big Nog’s performances at glacial speed.

The UFC’s refusal to sign Josh Barnett, re-sign Andrei Arlovski, ignore Werdum, and of course land Fedor have added up to create quite the quagmire. I’m sure no one expected us to come full circle the way we have with no better contenders than ballroom dancer Tim Sylvia and overhyped Brandon Vera.

Now there is no HW champion either.

    HA! HA!

  • stellar53 says:

    absolutely appalled by the news….

IMO, kind of a dick move by Couture, nobody can tell me that he hasn’t been getting taken care of by the UFC….this totally fucks shit up…..

  • MJC_123 says:

This is officially when it all starts going shit.

The H/W decision is a mess due to no legitimate contenders.
The LH/W decision has one major Marquee draw Jackson and a likely contender Griffin…an maybe houston Alexander all the other names Silva, Lidell, Shogun are bolloxed.
The Middleweight division is ruled by Silva forever more until Henderson arrives and then its back and forth between them.
The Welterweight division rocks but is on hold due to some shitty big brother show
And Sherk has tarded up the leightweight division with drug use.

Oh and the main event of UFC 78 is Evans vs Bisping!! ARRRGH

Remember how good things were at UFC 71….Well that was how beautiful the Titanic looked in Southampton….and we all know what happened….

the news about randy is about the worst thing i’ve heard all year. my fucking god, what a strange way to split, not even an announcement from the man himself, but an assistant? WTF?
some people are speculating that money was a big deal, with pride fighters being offered gazillions of bucks and randy getting a bit shafted. i personally don’t think a quarter-million is too shafted, but if they’re offering fedor 2 mill a bout and can’t get it done, maybe it is time for randy to get out. he’s fucking 44, and he doesn’t want to get mauled by some no-name and lose his…uh…good looks for acting.
who can say…there’ll be a lot more about this soon. we could all be the victims of some disgruntled assistant’s idea of a funny joke.

  • garth says:

    apparently not:
you have to fuck with randy pretty hard to get him that pissed, i’d imagine.

  • garth says:

i think “gobsmacked” is the only way i can describe how i’m feeling right now.

  • Audacity says:

The UFC seems to have prematurely shot their wad on what was meant to be a dry run and now they have something of a mess on their hands.

  • garth says:

audacity: they have a big pile of steamy mess all over their face. randy pretty much kick them square in the gents. what a hardcore move by the natural…

  • stellar53 says:

Statement from Dana White about Couture:

“I’m not surprised at all by Randy’s decision. I talked to Randy several weeks ago and he said that if he couldn’t fight Fedor, then he has nothing left to prove in the sport of mixed martial arts.

He has been doing a lot of acting, and I know he is in South Africa right now filming a movie. I think it’s a great move for Randy’s acting career to retire from fighting while he is on top.

As we all know, Randy retired before. The landscape in MMA changes every day. So when he is ready to come out of retirement again, he is still under contract with me, and I’m ready to promote him.”

  • Matt says:

Dam, where the fuck have I been. I thought you were kidding about Randy. That is fucked up.

  • Kris says:

My vote is to make Sylvia-Vera a title fight. Winner (and new champion) face Nogueira in November.

  • Kris says:

    November = February

  • ajadoniz says:

    i am now bandwagonless.

  • BigFern says:

dude…funniest and truest line EVER “However, the guys at MMAJunkie normally won’t give you their opinion on the fucking weather,” they’re such tools….and i can’t stand how they’re a front for that turd of a fighter Sean Salmon….what a douche

  • martin kasik says:

Randy doesn,t want to fight Brandon Vera and I don,t Blame Him. At his age why run the risk of getting hurt bad. Brandon makes people pay the price to fight him..Flame all you want in a years time you,ll agree too

  • Frank says:

Martin are you trying to say that randy is worried about fighting Brandon Vera….but not Fedor? Do you even watch this sport at all?

  • Frank says:

In case this issue was brought to your attention by a pop-up add or a spike tv commercial during manswers, please see
for a list of the who’s who in the heavyweight division. Please note the word Winner under Fedor’s name repeatedly.

  • Brandon Vera does have a tendency to fuck up the guys he fights. Most fighters can walk away from Fedor fights with some bruising. Not saying I agree with the statement either way but it’s not too far out there.
