We want Gomi, not Gono! Argh!

Whoever’s at the UFC that’s responsible for booking Japanese talent needs to be punched in the face 5000 times by Houston Alexander. Stop booking the wrong guys, goddamnit. The last thing the UFC wants to do is encourage the stereotype that Japanese fighters are bland and never finish fights. While Akihiro Gono certainly has some flashy entrances, over half of his 46 fights have gone to a decision. BORING!

  • garth says:

true. gomi, while vastly overrated, still finishes, one way or another. i want to see him lose via a brand new hold: “Bong lock”. Instead of tapping, he’d look at his opponent and say in a strangled voice “good shit!”

  • TIGERTAO says:

That sounds like the Diaz rematch right there garth! Gobongplata anyone?

  • dragomort says:

I’d rather see Gono’s entrances in the US than half of the fights. Could you picture the crowd reaction? XD

  • Jordan Breen says:

The problem is that it is up to Japanese fighters, really. Zuffa aren’t actively pursuing specific international talent. Gomi may be somewhat of an exception, as are your guys like Fedor and so on. However, when it comes to guys like Gono, Chonan, Nakamura, Omigawa, Kotani and so on, they’re getting deals because they have managers who are pitching them to Zuffa. That’s how most guys get their foot in the door now.

The bigger problem exists that most guys in Japan don’t have a Monte Cox or a Ken Pavia. A lot of guys plying their trade in Shooto, Pancrase, GCM, wherever, don’t have someone who has the ability to communicate with promoters like the UFC and get them a deal. The guys that do will continue to end up in the UFC. There’s only ever going to be a few guys Zuffa has a real particular interest in, that they go out of their way to pursue. The only way you’ll see a guy like Kawajiri or Ishida in the Octagon is if they go out, and get a representative who is gonna go to bat for them with Joe Silva.

  • Swedish guy says:

Still, this fella has beaten Hector Lombard, who at his first UFC event get to square off with top contender and my favourite armenian Karo Parisyan. Stupid. Plus, UFC could in fact use som entertaining entrances like Gono’s.

  • Pontus says:

If you look at Gono’s record the last five years hes 15-3-2 with his only losses coming to Shogun, Henderson and Kang so dont write him off at 170.. He might be really good there.

  • Accomando says:

Whoever’s at the UFC that’s responsible for booking Japanese talent needs to be punched in the face 5000 times by Houston Alexander…. = Death

  • dragomort says:

Death? When Houston knocks people out they gain strength, not lose it! Did you not wonder how Jardine gained the power to defeat Chuck?

  • marshal says:

Imagine how pissed off people would be if 10 minutes of a PPV were taken up by a Gono entrance.
    P.S. Jardine owns Chuck’s gameplan.
