Urijah Faber thinks he’s still relevant

Everyone’s talking like Urijah Faber’s days as a legit title contender are over after getting outworked for five rounds by Renan Barao. Surprisingly enough, Urijah Faber disagrees:

“I’m right there with the top guys. Renan Barao is on a 30-fight win streak. I don’t feel like I was beat up in the fight, I feel like I just lost. I didn’t do enough to win. I landed some good punches, I was elusive in the fight. I just fought Dominick Cruz, I thought won that fight, I knocked him down three times, didn’t really take too much damage there also. It’s not like I’m getting severely outclassed here by any of these guys. I’m just a smidgen off and I’ve got some things to work on. The bottom line is, in the last nine years, I’ve been fighting guys at the top five of the weight class, at whatever the given time is. I don’t think that needs to change. Would I like get some ‘fight of the night’ bonuses? Could I get some bonuses on big fights against [lower ranked guys]? Sure, some entry level guys. But I’m right there at the top, man. I’m right there in the running. If you can line up some guys that are going to beat me up and put me out the running, then let’s do that. But until then, I’m just going to keep training and stay positive.”

At least he gets why he lost – he kickboxed with Barao instead of wrestling and scrambling and basically turning it into a dogfight. It must be hard to dogfight though after suffering a broken rib in the first round. Goddamn Urijah is tough! But at some point, the more relevant part of that is his shit keeps getting broke in fights, and maybe he should drink less malk or something.

Everyone’s banging the drum now for a fight between Faber and Miguel Torres. But what was once a dream fight is now a fight for relevance, and that’s no way for that match-up to go down. Give each of them a soft rebound and a chance to erase the memories from their last fight. Maybe Torres will start fighting like himself again, and maybe Faber will put on a great performance without the stress of a title hanging over his head. Then we have a fight that would not only be awesome to see, it’d actually matter.

blah, blah, blah i’m well past my prime but blah, blah, blah at least im not getting killed in the octagon by the best blah blah blah so that still makes me relevent

    c’mon Urea, don’t be tito circa 2009….

  • voice of reason says:

he is still kinda relevant though, much more than tito, but he just can’t beat top 2-3 guys… kinda like florian.

plus hes got bills to pay and stuff,u can’t fight forever so he’s gotta fight while he can. just cos u won’t be ceo doesn’t mean you should quit ur job.
