UFC 84: ‘Nasal fracture’ city

The medical suspension list for UFC84 has come out, and it’s as extensive as you might think. There’s the standard list of guys with cuts and bumps who are suspended for two weeks, and then you’ve got guys like Keith Jardine and Wilson Gouveia who are fuuuuucked up:

Keith Jardine (defeated by Wanderlei Silva via KO) – Nasal fracture; Must have fracture cleared by doctor or no contest until November 21st. Minimum suspension until July 24th with no contact until July 9th.

Wilson Gouveia (defeated by Goran Reljic via TKO) – Nasal fractures, sinus fractures, broken ribs; Must have injuries cleared by doctor or no contest until November 21st. Minimum suspension until July 24th with no contact until July 9th.

Jason Tan (defeated by Dong Hyun Kim via TKO) – Nasal fracture; Must have fracture cleared by doctor or no contest until November 21st. Minimum suspension until July 9th with no contact until June 24th.

Considering the beating Dong laid on Jason Tan, I’m surprised he didn’t come out worse. Then again, Dong probably beat Tan right out of the UFC, which is the worst injury of all. As for Wilson Gouveia, I hope he learned an important lesson about pissing off people who kick harder than a mule. Goran Relijic may still be a sloppy fighter, but I have nightmares where he kicks me in the face and my head explodes like in Scanners. And then I wake up all sticky, which really makes no sense whatsoever.

Damn, I really wish that would’ve been the outcome for Wandy and Jackson’s inevitable 3rd fight. Asking for another dominating performance like that though against Jackson is being a lil greedy. But seeing Silva hold Quinton by the throat laying blows on his mug, would really put the exclamation point on who’s the better fighter. In either case, I don’t want to see any fighters sidelined for that long with a nasal fracture though.

I think there’s a similar mandatory suspension any time you get knocked out, so it’s no so much the fracture.

  • I totally thought Sherk broke his right hand but I guess it wasn’t that bad.

    What about Wellisch?

    He got rocked.

I searched, couldn’t find it online, did they release the suspensions for UFC 83?

I wondered about Serra’s ribs after GSP laid carpet like that.

Sinus fractures….Reljic didn’t just break Gouveia’s nose, he broke his FACE behind it. And the ribs…
Don’t underestimate the power of training with Crocop 😀

I was thinking the exact same thing this morning. WTF is up with all the broken nose.

Totally unrelated: I watched your 2 vids on the IPECAC bet post. I laughed so fucking hard at the video of the guy puking my ribs and lungs were literally hurting. Watched it a second time with the same results.

According to a ringside doctor from Cali who posts at the MMAWeekly forums, most times, the fight doctor doesn’t know if there’s a fracture, but it’s nearly impossible to get a fighter to see his own doctor for anything less. As a result, they just write “fracture”, the fighter goes home, and gets checked properly. The poster also said that sinus fractures are quite hard to diagnose, so they may not all be actual fractures.
