Two potential big fights being rumored today for UFC 105 in Manchester: BJ Penn vs Diego Sanchez and Michael Bisping vs Denis Kang. I’m thrilled at the idea of BJ Penn defending his belt again so soon, but it is worth noting that BJ swore never to fight in the UK again because the PPV numbers suck and affect his bottom line.
Michael Bisping and Denis Kang both get to try and prove they’re more substance than hype against each other, and I don’t know how it will turn out. Bisping looked like shit in his last fight and who knows where he stands talent wise … somewhere above Chris Leben and below Dan Henderson, which is a wide spread. Denis Kang is in the same range, but a stupid loss to Alan Belcher and a meh decision win against a very meh Professor X aren’t exactly confidence inspiring.
These two fights are enough to upgrade UFC 105’s lineup from utter shite to half decent. Thus far the majority of the rest of the card is a lame combination of TUF fighters and underwhelming UK/Europe guys. An interesting opponent for Dan Hardy might help me give more of a shit about this card (perhaps Yoshida or Dong Hyun Kim) but I have a feeling they’ll stick us with more regional chump filler. Check out how it’s currently shaping up:
- BJ Penn vs Diego Sanchez
- Michael Bisping vs Denis Kang
- Dan Hardy vs TBA
- Ross Pearson vs TBA
- Terry Etim vs TBA
- James Wilks vs. Matt Brown
- Damarques Johnson vs. Peter Sobotta
- Paul Kelly vs. Dennis Siver
- Andre Winner vs. Rolando Delgado
UPDATE: All hail the indisputable power of The Secret: Dan Hardy will be facing Dong Hyun Kim, which makes me and probably 10 other people excited!
