TUF choices

The next season of TUF is set to begin filming in a few week and there’s still no official word as to who’s going to coach. Now Dana White has come out and shared his top options with MMA Fighting in what I assume is part of his ‘let the fans pick ‘ kick he’s currently on. I’m sure he’ll be keeping a close eye on what the idiot Twitter hive mind has to buzz about the options. Some excerpts:

Among the pairs he named as possibilities were a duo rumored to be up for the job, MMA legend Wanderlei Silva and recently suspended middleweight Chael Sonnen.

Anther possibility? UFC bantamweights Miguel Torres and Urijah Faber.

A surprising duo White mentioned was UFC heavyweights Frank Mir and Brock Lesnar. The pair has already fought twice, splitting the series 1-1. There was talk of a rubber match recently before White backed off the bout. However, with the added push of TUF highlighting the intense rivalry between the pair, the fight would likely do a monster number on pay-per-view, a serious consideration in deliberations.

The biggest issue I have with Sonnen vs Wanderlei is I don’t feel like watching several months of television to hype up a fight with a painfully obvious outcome. Plus there’s that little issue of Chael being in the middle of steroids suspension. And while the NSAC could grant Chael the right to coach the show if they feel like it, there’s a small problem: NSAC head Keith Kizer recently said Chael lied under oath during his steroid hearing when he claimed he’d spoken to Kizer about his testosterone replacement therapy. Having to explain that one might keep Chael out of Vegas for a while.

The rest of the choices are bordering on square peg through a round slot too. Putting the bantamweight belt on the shelf for 9 months now seems like a dumb way to start the weightclass off in the UFC. And Brock Lesnar would rather spend his time out in the woods covered in deer pheromones than in Vegas training a bunch of yahoos. From there it gets into some pretty slim pickings. Any suggestions? You might want to tweet @DanaWhite with yours, because he seems to need them.

Why would the BW belt be placed on a shelf? Neither Torres not Faber holds it.

  • iamphoenix says:

Man, Dana White is being ultra sarcastic when he said Brock Lesnar can coach fighters. His deadpan delivery is awesome.

  • I am the Liquor says:

    Paul Daley and Josh Koscheck.

I’d still like to see Leben vs Wanderlei as coaches, but I guess it depends on whether or not Leben will get through Stann (he will, Stann’s game plan is to “out-tough” Leben which is a terrible, terrible strategy) and that’s a bit of a risk as filming will start shortly thereafter. Silva vs Leben is a fight that could definitely go either way and would be pretty epic.

The UFC should just borrow Miller and Diaz from Strikeforce, stick them on TUF as coaches, contractually force them to fight at a catch weight on PPV (and keep 100% of the profits), dump them back into Strikeforce and let Strikeforce continue run their business into the ground. Sure it would be a massive marketing push for Strikeforce, Miller and Diaz. However, Miller and Diaz’ would finally have to fight, the UFC would have an AMAZING season of TUF and a huge PPV, and they would give the fighters back to Strikeforce as stars whose main drawing power has just peaked on a UFC PPV. Strikeforce is all but guaranteed to mismanage everything and continue to hemorrhage money through Showtime making any brief attention through UFC exposure irrelevant. I can not even imagine the ratings TUF would get for that season.

Obviously this could never, ever happen – but this is the TUF season I would ask of Dana if I could.

I dunno about this one coming up but if GSP gets past Shields and Silva gets past Belfort… I’d love to see a GSP vs Silva TUF next with a end of year finale between them even though Silva’s english is proper shite.

  • AcadianBacon says:

    Leben vs Wanderlei +1

I was wondering what the fuck I was going to do about my next handbag selection. \/\/

  • chim55 says:

what is the “painfully obvious outcome” of Wanderle vs Sonnen?

  • shawn says:

    Wand v Sonnen FTW

  • Omomatta says:

    Miller/Sotiropoulus for a shot at Maynard’s belt.

  • G Funk says:

Chim—> Was that a serious question?

  • glassjawsh says:

@ chim – 15 minutes of boring grapplefucking leading to a decision win for sonnen

  • chim55 says:

yes, just wonderin what popular opinion was.

I see what yous mean, but I still reckon Wand could KO him. Possibly. Maybe. Cripes that would be beautiful. And after this one, Chael does nt test positive and disappear under a media blackout, so we get to hear his excuses. lol,

Wishful thinkin maybe. Maybe not, we dont know until it happens. If it does.

  • G Funk says:

    ^ From his back?

  • chim55 says:

im sure Wand knows how to throw up a triangle.

    But that was facetious.

Nah, I would like to see it, regardless.

  • CAP says:

No matter who coaches I always lose interest in that show. Just don’t hold up a champ and his belt.
