Loretta Hunt has a new piece out on the ongoing mystery surrounding Fedor’s return to the cage, and the first part of the headline is ‘Strikeforce, M-1 Deal Close‘. If you’re like me and observe reality on a consistent basis, you’re probably under the impression that Strikeforce and M-1 already have a multiple fight deal (note Josh Gross claiming that Strikeforce is a ‘major player’ ‘vying for the same fighters’ as the UFC, lulz), of which only one fight has been fulfilled. But wait! Rumblings around the web (seriously, forums and innuendo are our Sportscenter) stated that M-1 was unhappy with the amount of co-promotion they were getting, feeling inadequately represented on the CBS telecast.
And now for some vague, diplomatic Russian-speak that neither confirms nor denies anything above:
“We were renegotiating. I think we’re pretty much at the end of that road,” said Kogan. “After the CBS show, we thought that the terms needed a little bit tweaking — nothing major, just a little bit of tweaking. So, we had a round of negotiations with Strikeforce. Everything went positively. We’re pretty much at the end.”…
“Obviously, we are much more than the management company for Fedor,” said Kogan. “For us, it’s really important that the M-1 Global brand is acknowledged on these co-promotion events. As much as the partners made a lot of effort to acknowledge the co-branding, the media basically picked up on the fact that it was Strikeforce and kind of forgot about everything else, which wasn’t the most ideal for us.”
I love the demur endings M-1 Global’s officials (Evgeni Kogan is their Director of Operations) leave on their statements. He goes on to deny rumored negotiations with the UFC and state that Fedor’s hand is healthy and he is training – really, I’ve had my problems with Loretta’s writing before, but it’s an informative piece. However, LOL at describing Fabricio Werdum as ‘a former top 5 UFC heavyweight.’ So is Tank Abbott. Not exactly the kind of resume I’m looking for when I consider dream opponents for The Last Emperor. Replacing ‘former’ with ‘current’ and ‘5’ with ‘2’ would be wunderbar.
