These title shots are fucking bullshit

The most annoying thing about non-title UFC events isn’t the actual lack of a belt or big hype fight – I can grit my teeth, enjoy the undercard, and deal with that. It’s the inevitable attempts by Dana White to add more importance to shows by throwing around the potential for title shots:

“If Junior dos Santos goes in there and knocks this guy out, he’s there,” White said. “He’s ready for that title shot.”

Midsy does a great job of explaining why this is fucking retarded (I wonder if his bosses will get a pissed off call from Dana too?) and I’d just like to point out that these proclamations rarely raise hype levels significantly and worse often put fighters into headsets where they start fighting like bitches trying to protect their shot. That’s when they don’t bench themselves all together to ‘wait their turn’.

Dos Santos vs Yvel is a great fight between two exciting fighters (and I’m 1000% on Dos Santos’ nuts), but neither is in the top 5 of their division. Whatever happened to the concept of top contenders fighting eachother to determine a challenger for the title? Everyone always talks about the UFC’s busy schedule leading to watered down cards. My biggest issue is how the UFC has to bend over backwards keeping certain kinds of fights from happening because they need a steady stream of challengers to fill that schedule. Take a look at the runs that have been earning guys title shots lately:

Dan Hardy: Akihiro Gono, Rory Markham, Marcus Davis, Mike Swick
Conspicuously absent: Josh Koscheck, Jon Fitch, Thiago Alves, Matt Hughes

Diego Sanchez: David Bielkheden, Luigi Fioravanti, Joe Stevenson, Clay Guida
Conspicuously absent: Frankie Edgar, Gray Maynard, Kenny Florian, Sean Sherk

Thales Leites: Floyd Sword, Ryan Jensen, Nate Marquardt*, Drew McFedries
Conspicuously absent: Dan Henderson, Demian Maia, Yushin Okami

Kenny Florian: Alvin Robinson, Din Thomas, Joe Lauzon, Roger Huerta, Joe Stevenson
Conspicuously absent: Frankie Edgar, Gray Maynard, Diego Sanchez, Sean Sherk

Joe Stevenson: Yves Edwards, Donk Mishima, Melvin Guillard, Kurt Pellegrino
Conspicuously absent: Frankie Edgar, Gray Maynard, Kenny Florian, Diego Sanchez, Sean Sherk

Having a few guys slip through once in a while who haven’t taken on the top guys in their division would be okay I guess, but this is a fucking pattern that should disturb you as an MMA fan. I’m not saying every potential contender needs to go through the complete gauntlet of top studs. I’m just saying that contenders should have to fight at least one top 5 guy in their division to earn a title shot. I don’t get what’s so nutjobby or unreasonable about that.
