The Weekly Rundown

(Alves shows GSP his “>”really scary” face.)

And now the news: will soon have every televised fight from UFC 28 to the present. Ever wondered just how many strikes Kalib Starnes threw at Nate Quarry? Well now you’ll know the answer when the numbers go live. Big thank you to Rami Genauer for all the hard work he and his constituents put in. Here’s an awesome fun fact from Fightmetric: “[Tim] Sylvia landed more strikes on Cabbage in under seven minutes than any fighter has in any fight of any length in modern UFC history.”

UFC 100 was kind of a big deal if Twitter and Google are any indication. Everyone was at the e-water cooler for this one. People can say what they want about the card not being up to the romanticized standards of PRIDE (“Bart Gunn vs. Minowa Man? BRILLIANT!”), but it delivered more than enough talking points for the casual fans – from a brutal KO for the ages to wince-inducing title defenses by the most prolific fighters in the sport.

Quinton Jackson once again got himself into the headlines for the worst reasons this week. During an interview with Cage Potato’s new correspondent Heather Something-or-other, Rampage began rubbing himself on the girl in a way that would make Akon blush. The girl told Sports Illustrated that she was shocked and freaking out, but take that with a grain of salt since she did the complete opposite of discouraging him by reciprocating with a big grin. Obviously Jackson was inappropriate but it’s just as bad that the girl is now trying to play the victim. (Please save me, first amendment!)

Dana White made it clear in the post-fight press conference that he wants to bring Fedor in for a match with Lesnar. Brock’s win in the most prolific MMA show of all time just made the timing right to finally pull something like this off. Think about it – there’s no casual fan in the world that doesn’t know Brock and how frightening he is, and there’s no casual fan in the world that knows who Fedor is. The match is a win-win license to print money; either Brock finally shatters (shadoobie) the PRIDE mythos or Fedor steps out of nowhere to become the next “Next Big Thing” for slaying the demon.

MMA Payout started calling out those who are p-footing around Zuffa’s new business tactics. Lots of places are treating it like the giant squid at the table in order to toe the company line at the expense of this little thing called “journalistic integrity”. It’s really sorry that the media – the people who can actually bring change – are staying away from improving the livelihood of fighters. C’mon, if The New York Times got all in the face of the Pentagon then you can ask Dana White a tough question.
