The upside of getting screwed over

While it’s 110% bullshit that Nam Phan got screwed over this weekend, there is a silver lining to the situation. Remember Jason Brilz? If he hadn’t gotten screwjobbed in his fight against Lil Nog, people probably wouldn’t remember anything but how forgettable that fight was. But because the fight went unfairly to the other guy, Brilz got several weeks of love and consolation coming his way. The same is happening for Nam Phan, and more:

“Dana white came by backstage and told me, ‘You’re getting your win bonus because you won that fight,’ ” Phan said. “I thought business is business, and I just thought if I lost, I lost, and I would only get my base pay. That’s how it usually goes. But the UFC – Dana White takes care of the fighters. I really appreciate that.”

“I don’t feel too bad,” Phan said. “The whole Asian community and the MMA community thought I won. I think Leonard and (Garcia coach) Greg Jackson think I won. In the end, I got my win bonus and Fight of the Night, and Dana White and the UFC thought I won.

“In the end, it wasn’t too bad.”

PHANTASTIC!!!!! That’s enough to offset the cost of that spiffy new gi!

  • CRM_Stephen says:

We need a gif of that Asian guy in the cage door in that picture. His reactions were awesome.

  • Reverend Clint says:

and people say dana is a bad guy… no he is a shrewd ‘n fair businessman

  • theinsaneoneJustinMcCully says:

If anybody has anything bad to say about Dana White from now on, you have to run it by me from now on. That dude is the Savior of MMA and should be worshiped.

  • SprechenSieDouche says:

Fight of the Night due exclusively to Garcia’s aggression. Even in the third, when he was gassed and ineffective, Garcia was aggressive, while Nam could have ended the fight if he was similarly aggressive. Aggression is one of the main judging criteria, right? The lack of aggression and Rogan’s critique of Garcia’s technique made me long for the WEC. The ufc is home to cookie cutter gamers. I want to see fights.

  • MadMan says:

Not only did Nam win his fight against Garcia, but i’m of the opinion that he also won his semi-final fight against Michael Johnson. So basically, Dana’s just performing damage control…he couldn’t let the guy who got screwed out of fighting for the TUF 12 championship, get screwed again. Nam’s a tough fucker, with damn good power in his hands AND feet….Dana is a pretty smart guy, but DAMN, get his nuts outta your mouths jackals.

  • Marley Marl says:

It’s too bad though, he should’ve won, it was a huge match up in my opinion for someone straight out of the TUF house… going up against a guy with heaps of exposure and recent fights.

The fight was so obviously in his favor, his shots were so clean, you could see Leonard head rocketing back every time he got hit. And Leonard’s stupid wild swinging punches.

Will we ever see new judges/judging criteria?

  • Redping says:

madman, its a bit silly to think he won the fight against johnson. I actually feel the same, and i was really pissed off when they called johnson. but it’s a close fight – what are you going to do? its nowhere near a travesty and barely even that agruable that he should’ve won, but it is arguable. But people only care about big bullshit, not possibly a slight bullshit.

then again i had hendricks winning the 1st and 3rd so shows what i know about judging

  • MadMan says:

Yeah, i’m with you on that Redping. The semi-final was a damn close fight and could’ve went either way. I just felt like they gave the fight to Johnson because he got those 2 takedowns in the final round. But, although he took Nam down twice in the last round, he did absolutely nothing with those takedowns (except get elbowed in the head and punched in the face by Nam).
‘Nam was pretty much disregarded on the show, almost as if he didn’t deserve to be there, but he showed his determination and heart…respect!

btw…i’m sure that you could out-judge those judges any ole’ day :)

  • frickshun says:

MadGuy–>I fucking hate MJ but I still thought he edged it out over Nam.

Sprechen–>Is that just a weak ass troll job? Nam was COUNTERING masterfully. And when he did come forward, he hurt Lenny a couple of times. The kid is a rounded, entertaining fighter. I liked him when I saw him lose on a Sengoku card & I’ll like him even better if he cuts to 135.

  • Redping says:

Yeah, the MJ fight was decided entirely on the takedowns. Personally I would rank a liver shot higher than a takedown, but that’s not really what happens in the ufc, so when they said johnson i kinda accepted it. It was close enough that I didn’t get all ‘WTF? THE KOREAN ZOMBIE KNOCKED HIM DOWN IN EVERY ROUND AND TOOK HIS BACK’ about it though, it was just a bummer.

    Nam vs Pickett next pls

  • SprechenSieDouche says:

COUNTERING is not aggression. When North Korea bombed south korea last week, who was the aggressor? Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida are not being the aggressor when they are countering, and neither was Nam. Regardless of who was the better technician, if aggression is a judging criteria, Leonard gets points for that.

i hate when guys supposedly are the best, but don’t finish their opponent when opportunity presents itself (eg Anderson Silva, and now Nam).

  • agentsmith says:

Are you a judge in California? Sounds like it.

  • frickshun says:

Sprechen–>you’re right. Leben was tooling the shit out of A.Silva before he stumbled & the ref mistakenly stopped the fight. Or the time James Thompson was murking Aleksander before he slipped on a banana peel & the ref inadvertantly called the fight off. Then there was every time Cabbage fought & used his face to pummel opponents fists (he was putting it on Silvia something fierce until that crooked ref jumped in).

  • DJ ThunderElbows says:

Goddamn Frick, stop saying shit I agree with or I’ll have to respect you.

  • frickshun says:

DJ–>I’m not talking to you til you fix FL 2.0

Also–>I can’t figure out how the fuck to embed a goddamn pic in a comment!!!

  • G Funk says:

“The whole Asian community thought I won.”

How does he know this? Did he talk to this guy?

  • Komodo says:

Awesome on Dana’s part, good for Nam too.
That cheered me right the fuck up :)
