The UFC only wants ‘Team Players’

The latest news regarding Matt Lindland that’s not false is the following update on his status with the UFC, as per Dana White:

“I’ve had some issues with Lindland in the past. I have talked to him, and they want to continue to talk,” he said. “I am still on the fence with Lindland. I want someone that wants to be a team player. I don’t need a promotion full of Titos (Ortiz).”

So basically in order to fight in the UFC, you have to drink the Kool-Aid. If you’re not willing to drink the Kool-Aid, then get the fuck outta Jonestown. Great.

I also love how Dana White “doesn’t want a promotion full of Titos”. Yeah, because Tito Ortiz didn’t carry the UFC through the dark ages of MMA and isn’t still one of the biggest stars in the promotion. Why would you ever want more guys like him? Because he expects to be paid what he’s worth? Because he’s got a spine and doesn’t just take it up the ass?

The real question is “Who’s really the one that’s hard to work with?” Are Matt Lindland, Tito Ortiz, Josh Barnett, Fedor, Randy, Ken and Frank Shamrock really hard to work with, or is it Dana White that’s a fucking dope?

To me, the situation is obvious. When upper management talks about being a ‘team player’, that just means they want you to ‘take one for the team’. If that means fighting injured or fighting for a lot less money than you should or being sacrificed as a rebound, then hey … that’s what being a team player is all about! But just remember that when you’re all used up, Team UFC will toss you aside and move on to find more ‘team players’. Because there’s no “I” in “Team”, and that means “U” are not important.

You have to wonder when words like these will REALLY come around to bite him in his BALD ASS!!!! I guess Randy started the process…I think

  • Big D D says:

I wonder when Dana says “take one for the team” if he wants you to bend over or can you “take one” standing upright?

  • Vee says:

To this day, people will still go see Tito fight. If he could not finish Rashad Evans then I don’t know who. Fine, he has a re-occuring back injury. Regardless, people will still pay to see Tito fight . . . he has fans.

  • Wu Tang says:

FUCK YOU!!! I read the Jonestown thing.. That is fucked up, i like to keep my ignorant mind closed, and reading that makes me wonder why i am still an athiest/buddhist (for good reason!). Fuck, now i will have to punch every jahova witness that approach me!

As for being dicks, it comes from column A and collumn B. Dana is a dictator and his fighters has egos after each wins. Dana should try to do things from a buisness stand point rather and from his feelings. Its buisness after all, not who he likes or dislikes. But hes a dick and they dont like to be told what to do.

  • Keith says:

I like your write ups on MMA news its nice to get it with a little humor, that said this isn’t going to turn into a Dana bashing website al sherdog is it? The guys a cock we know can we move on now to something relavent.

  • Sacha says:

As someone said, you can’t spell “fuck” without a U, an F, and a C.

  • We’re equal opportunity haters

  • intenso says:

When are you guys going to create a compound for the FL cult?

  • Tommy says:

I don’t like the fact that they package shit and sell it to us. Seems to me I complained about the event being shit and was told the card rocked except for the main event. Now having said that if you work for a company you should and must commit to it. Drinking the ‘kool-aid’ isn’t that bad of a thing and should be done. You don’t see a marine saying the army is better and jumping ship.

  • Tom says:

How the fuck can you be an atheist/buddhist? It’s official. Wu-tang is a fucking retarded dumbass.

  • Stan says:

I get the feeling you’re intentionally being stupid about this just so you can keep up the angry tone. “Team player” in this context means that Dana wants Lindland to become a UFC fighter, in other words to sign a multi-fight exclusive contract and honor it.

If you read Lindland interviews you’ll realize that he wants one fight deals against opponents he selects and the option to walk away from the UFC even after he’s won a title. It’s the same problem with Fedor.

The problem with Tito is that he signs a contract for X money and halfway through demands Y money. Randy did exactly the same thing.

Did all of you really need that explained to you?

  • Frank Costello says:

Dana sounds like a bitch in a beauty salon.

  • Tommy says:

He knows this Stan. It’s just not as fun or funny to actually be fair to Dana and the UFC. Better to try and kick them, like it matters or will make even the smallest difference.

  • No, considering we’ve covered all that on this site before. Of course you’re ignoring the fact that Matt Lindland has come out and said he’d be willing to fight exclusively for the UFC, but now Dana White is still talking ‘Team Player’ blah blah blah. I have no problem with most of the terms in the UFC contract … exclusivity is just common sense. Not working for a competing organization is the same. But when you have a guy not booking fighters who are ranked in the top five of their weight class over possible concerns that they may not be ‘team players’, it gets a little stupid.

  • smoogy says:

The question is, does Lindland want to fucking be a fucking fighter?

  • vess says:

Take off the rose-tinted glasses folks. Its all business. If you are a running a business and one of your employees is a malcontent who has no redeeming value to the business, what do you do, you boot his ass unto the pavement. This is not rocket science.

  • RoB says:

    # 9. “You don’t see a marine saying the army is better and jumping ship.”

but you do see marines turning to ridiculous amounts of booze, tobacco, porno and or cheap strippers.

  • Xavier says:

Tom, that’s been official for a really long time.

“Matt Lindland, Tito Ortiz, Josh Barnett, Fedor, Randy, Ken and Frank Shamrock really hard to work with”

Short answer, yes. They all want things they’re not worth. If you want something extravagant and nobody will give it to you, why should the UFC give it to you? It’s a market economy and unless these guys have enough juice to power a new promotion (And Lindland vs. Fedor says they don’t) then market economics says that you should shut the fuck up and be happy with the hundreds of thousands you receive.

At the end of the day, the UFC can promote a cheaper fighter who comes up through TUF and will often get a better buyrate (and often, a better performance) than these guys who want millions of dollars. Tito is the only exception to this on that list, really.

  • jjdnb says:

    fuck dana white!

  • Palikero says:

    There’s no “I” in “Team,” but there’s a “Me.”

  • The Grass Hoppa says:

seeing as though all this shit has already been said, and i have nothing constructive to add, i’ll just say that
    1. dana white is a cocksucker, and
    2. the fighters are not asking too much, nor asking more than they are worth in comparison to how much the ufc makes.

Being employed by the ufc is a bit different to being employed elsewhere, cos if you are a malcontent no one gives a fuck because you aren’t spending every day with the entire rest of the work force. People don’t see the “mal-contentness” of fighters, they see the bodies left in there wake inside the ring.
