So the word is Tito Ortiz was offered a contract via Lorenzo Fertitta that included a whole lot more base pay as well as a larger cut of PPV revenue. Tito turned the contract down – or at least for now – so he could see what other companies are offering. This apparently pissed the fuck out of Dana White, which caused him to come out and say he “wasn’t interested in being in the Tito Ortiz business”.
Now there’s two ways to look at this: Tito was offered a more than fair contract by the Fertittas and basically turned it down so he could shop himself around to other companies first. For a company that values loyalty above all else, I’m sure that stung like a motherfucker and just reinforced the idea that Tito is a big jerk.
On the other hand, what exactly has the UFC done lately to earn the loyalty of Tito Ortiz? Past Dana White talking shit about Tito and his girlfriend, the UFC took it one step further and set up his last fight against Machida to make him look bad. Don’t believe me? Hey, it’s the same shit they tried to do to Andrei Arlovski, putting him against painfully boring but generally effective blanket fighter Jake O’Brien. And wasn’t the original plan for Tito supposed to be a rematch with Rashad Evans?
Look, no one is denying that Ortiz is a fighter who’s best days are behind him. His skills simply haven’t held up to the evolution of the sport very well. But that doesn’t change the fact that he’s been shit on unmercifully by his own promotion, which is pretty unjust considering he dragged them through the dark ages of the sport. And now for the UFC to be upset that Tito wants to see what other offers are out there? That’s bullshit.
