The UFC offered Tito another contract

So the word is Tito Ortiz was offered a contract via Lorenzo Fertitta that included a whole lot more base pay as well as a larger cut of PPV revenue. Tito turned the contract down – or at least for now – so he could see what other companies are offering. This apparently pissed the fuck out of Dana White, which caused him to come out and say he “wasn’t interested in being in the Tito Ortiz business”.

Now there’s two ways to look at this: Tito was offered a more than fair contract by the Fertittas and basically turned it down so he could shop himself around to other companies first. For a company that values loyalty above all else, I’m sure that stung like a motherfucker and just reinforced the idea that Tito is a big jerk.

On the other hand, what exactly has the UFC done lately to earn the loyalty of Tito Ortiz? Past Dana White talking shit about Tito and his girlfriend, the UFC took it one step further and set up his last fight against Machida to make him look bad. Don’t believe me? Hey, it’s the same shit they tried to do to Andrei Arlovski, putting him against painfully boring but generally effective blanket fighter Jake O’Brien. And wasn’t the original plan for Tito supposed to be a rematch with Rashad Evans?

Look, no one is denying that Ortiz is a fighter who’s best days are behind him. His skills simply haven’t held up to the evolution of the sport very well. But that doesn’t change the fact that he’s been shit on unmercifully by his own promotion, which is pretty unjust considering he dragged them through the dark ages of the sport. And now for the UFC to be upset that Tito wants to see what other offers are out there? That’s bullshit.

  • i hope he finds another place to dwell other than the ufc so we can finally stop the Dana-Tito feud.

whatever you think of machida’s style, they put him in against an up and comer with an undefeated record on the televised portion of their PPV event. get real man. the tito conspiracy theory is getting a little ridiculous. are you so sure that machida is so great (even if you hate his style) that white/silva/the fertittas were POSITIVE he’d beat tito? Tito Ortiz, one of the greatest LHW’s to ever fight? they’re not psychics. they can’t guarantee fights.
with arlovski (and koscheck and sanchez) they threw them onto the dark part of the card. this is pretty much entirely different.

  • Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

Evas wasn’t able to fight Tito because Bisping’s opponent dropped off a card last year (along with everyone else), and it screwed up the schedule when they had to put Evans in to help rescue it (not that they really accomplished that).

Tito made a lot of money in that Machida fight, particularly given that he lost. He has nothing to complain about.

  • Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

By the way, I love how you’re both upset that UFC let Ortiz walk AND that they offered him a new contract which was for more money and a cut of the ancillary revenues that you think the fighters should be getting a cut of.

  • No, I’m saying that the UFC was angry that Tito turned down their offer so he could shop himself around, as if they have any right to expect any loyalty from Tito.

The UFC has already paved the road for Tito to leave, trying to fix things now is like trying to rebuild a house that’s burnt down using only the ashes

  • x5BoltMainx says:

    Let it go 😛

He made about $5 million dollars last year, so he has no right to bitch about the UFC not paying him “enough”. If you can’t feed your kids & live a “comfortable” life with $5 million bucks, then there’s obviously something wrong with you.

  • Jemaleddin says:

    a) Is anyone clamoring for Ortiz/Evans II? I’m not. Borefest.

    b) Re: Tito’s skills: keep in mind that he’s only been beaten in the last 9 years by hall-of-famer Randy Couture, dominant LHW champ Chuck Liddell, and undefeated bore-master Lyoto Machida. Not too shabby.

    c) For $5mil/year, you can shit on me all you like. LITERALLY.

  • Gina's boy toy says:

I would be surprise to see Tito go back after the whole Dana my b!tch shirt thing at the weight in. I guess money talks if he does.

  • Jeremy (not that Jeremy) says:

I think that before you embark on that brave new career that you’re contemplating, you might want to make sure you’re current on your shots.

  • Jemaleddin says:

    @Jeremy: Good lookin’ out.

  • MarleyMarl says:

After all this, and the UFC still wants him haha. Dana must be so pissed. Will be interesting what he does. Personally I like the hype around Tito’s fights, but he doesn’t really seem to finish fights.

  • GRD says:

I think the real issue here is that Tito has had only 2 exciting fights since 2004, and they were both losses to Chuck.
