The UFC announces it’s Toronto date

April 30th at the 70,000 capacity Skydome. Fuck you Rogers if you think I’m calling it the Rogers Center because you paid someone to put a sign on it.

Today, in recognition of this great Canadian passion, White and UFC Director of Canadian Operations Tom Wright, made the highly anticipated announcement that the Ultimate Fighting Championship® will host its first-ever event in Ontario as the UFC visits Toronto’s Rogers Centre on Saturday, April 30, 2011. The UFC also announced it will host a two-day Fan Expo at the Direct Energy Centre on April 29 and 30, rounding out what promises to be an historic and record-setting event.

Now we have to wait and see if the UFC is going to really pull out all the stops and make Anderson Silva vs GSP happen or if they decide a GSP / Brock duo fighting whoever will do the trick. I hate to be a downer, but thus far it looks like GSP still doesn’t wanna do it: Many people have talked about a fight between you and Anderson Silva. Are you really thinking about moving up in weight, or do you intend to stay in your weight class for a long time?
St. Pierre: I don’t want to move up right now, and I’m going to explain to you why. I have Josh Koscheck and also Jon Fitch, who is coming back. Now there is also Jake Shields. It is pretty clear that if I go up, it’s going to be very hard to come back and get my title again. If one day I go, I want to stay at the top. I’m not going to say I will never do it, because I may do it. Probably, at some point, this will happen, but it’s going to be at the right time. Right now, I also have a training partner [at middleweight], Nate Marquardt, that’s fighting with Yushin Okami [at UFC 122]. He is my friend and training partner, so I think he deserves another chance to fight for the title. I won’t say never, but right now, it’s off of my radar.

Jesus Christ up my baby’s ass with the pope, no one gives a shit about you staying at 185. All we want you to do is come in, ride Anderson Silva for five rounds, and CEMENT YOUR PLACE AS ONE OF THE GREATEST FIGHTERS OF ALL ALL TIME. After that you can go back to forgettable shit at 170 like Jon Fitch rematches and a Jake Shields fight. Don’t be scared, homey.

It sucks because Anderson’s clock is ticking rather loudly while GSP, barring serious injuries, has a lot of time left in the sport. I don’t think either of them really has compelling matchups in his division right now.

  • Schrute Boxe says:

good for toronto, they’ll finally get a chance to see what winning looks like.

  • glassjawsh says:

i love me some GSP but goddamnit this crap makes him sound ascurred

  • Boog says:

    SkyDome fo lyfe!

  • DJ ThunderElbows says:

I don’t think he wants to fight someone who walks around twenty or thirty pounds heavier without moving up to that weightclass by adding weight he will not be able to adequately remove or cut to return to his own weightclass. It would also slow him down, change his muscle composition/fiber recruitment and require time to recondition for fighting endurance, a retrain for flexibility. That’s a lot of shit for one fight in a division with few other opponents. At least welterweight is constantly getting new cats coming in.

Besides, even if he did gain weight Chael’s taught us all one thing, GSP would -at the very least- win a decision over him. GSP’s the better fighter, and Silva’s the better striker. Done.

But I still wanna see it someday. :)

I don’t want to see GSP ride Anderson Silva for five rounds, I wanna see Anderson shut up 55,000 Canadians by knocking his ass out. Now that would be entertaining. GSP needs to get off the damn rematch carousel and put it on the line. As an aside, I saw Bluejays games as a kid at the mo’fuckin’ SKYDOME, not the Rogers Centre. Bitch!

  • agentsmith says:

Interesting that it’s at the Rogers Centre (the stadium) and not the Air Canada Centre (the rink). The UFC has only broken 20k for attendance twice, with about 21500 at the first two Montreal shows (the last one sold only about 17500). Depending on how many levels they open up at the Rogers Centre, it’s expandable to over 3 times that. The WWF once had a Wrestlemania there with an attendance of over 68000.

  • scissors61 says:

This even’ts gonna draw from Buffalo, NYC, Ottawa, Montreal and any number of smaller cities as well as from the GTA. I think they could hit 60K easily.

  • G Funk says:

DJ, while your whole line of excuses sounds pretty good. I couldn’t help but to start thinking of how Silva jumped to LHW to jump right back to MW his next fight (twice). Plus he did it between two weight classes that are separated by TWENTY POUNDS, not fifteen… GSP is pussing out and giving these excuses that people(DJ) are eating right the fuck up.

“GSP’s the better fighter, and Silva’s the better striker. Done.”

It’s not often that I completely disagree with you on all of your points but what? Let me re-write this statement.

GSP is the better wrestler and Silva is the better fighter. Silva’s got striking and jits over GSP, and he finishes with both!

“The UFC announces it’s Toronto date”

    Shouldn’t that be “its”?

  • iamphoenix says:

It’s supposed to be its isn’t it.
