The problem with the Affliction card

I’m pretty sick and tired of people (okay, mainly the people throwing it) acting like the July 19th Affliction card is up there with the Second Coming. Truth of the matter is it’s a bunch of squash matches, which is pretty obvious when you look at the odds on any sportsbook:

  • Fabio Negao +325 vs Matt Lindland -450
  • Mike Whitehead +200 vs Renato Sobral -260
  • Brett Cooper +250 vs Mike Pyle -350
  • Fedor Emelianenko -350 vs Tim Sylvia +250
  • Josh Barnett -400 vs Pedro Rizzo +300
  • Aleksander Emelianenko -350 vs Paul Buentello +250

For those of you who don’t know how to read betting lines, let me make it easy for you: the bigger the difference between the numbers, the bigger the squash. The difference between Negao and Lindland is 775. Josh Barnett and Pedro Rizzo is 700. Tight matches rarely float above 400 and are usually much closer to 300. For example, Huerta vs Florian is 270. Franca vs Edgar is 290.

Jackal Godzillad was cheating on us and commenting over at Bloody Elbow. For shame! But he did something interesting: he shuffled the roster up to make a card that was infinitely better than what we’re actually getting:

  • Fedor Emelianenko vs. Tim Sylvia
  • Josh Barnett vs. Andre Arlovski
  • Renato Sobral vs. Rogerio Nogueira
  • Matt Lindland vs. Vitor Belfort
  • Pedro Rizzo vs. Paul Buentello
  • Aleksander Emelianenko vs. Ben Rothwell
  • Terry Martin vs. Edwin Dewees
  • Savant Young vs. Mark Hominick

Now THAT would be a card worth buying on pay-per-view.
