The not so grand prix

Bad news for the potential future of Strikeforce as a league: last weekend’s Heavyweight Grand Prix semi-finals were a total flop.

After the first two Grand Prix events landed in the top two all time Strikeforce ratings slots (741k viewers for Fedor vs. Silva and 624k viewers for Overeem vs. Werdum), Saturday’s show pulled in just 274,000 viewers. This made the event the second worst major Strikeforce event performance since the Showtime deal.

The only event that did worse ratings wise was the G3 show in the middle of the week. Attendance for this part of the grand prix was also balls. While official numbers have not been released yet, guesstimates from the people there put the numbers at around 1500 or less. While you can blame the terrible outcome on the card without any major draws, you could also make the argument that the UFC kinda sorta forgot to promote the event, what with the mega Fox news and Nick Diaz shenanigans sucking up all the oxygen last week.

  • Mixed Martial Adam says:

A few tweets & one Dana White video blog would have doubled those numbers.

I’m sure that most hardcore fans watched the show illegally/online & casual fans with showtime/superchannel didn’t even know the show was happening. That has to hurt ratings.

Funny that Nick Diaz continues to hurt Strikforce – directly and indirectly!

  • CAP says:

Reem on the card would have helped. Mo seems right Strikeforce is like a dying cancer patient. They are just waiting to take it off life support. If it’s going to go away anyway why put more time and money into it.

    Business as usual…

  • Blackula Jonez says:

    g funk nailed it.

  • bosswell says:

That’s too bad. It was a really good card except for the five-round snoozer between Rockhold and Souza.

  • Symbul says:

Did they throw any weight behind promoting it at all? Doesn’t seem like they did.

Strangely enough, considering how highly paid everyone was.

  • frickshun says:

Bosswell–>that was the only fight I didn’t watch b/c I haven’t had time. But I heard it was a great fight??

  • CAP says:

    Yeah I wouldn’t call it a snoozer.
