The most fan friendly sport in the world

Dana White continues to prove that ask, and ye shall receive. Above, he agrees to let a fan from the Q&A session put the strap on Georges St Pierre if he wins tonight. Dana has a long history of accommodating Q&A fans, and they’ve quickly learned they can get more than just a hug from him:

In front of family, friends and fight fans, Justin and Deanna Peacock were married at 9 a.m. inside the famed Ultimate Fighting Championship octagon just 36 hours before more than 55,000 fans were going to pack the Rogers Centre for UFC 129.

The couple met at a fan event. Their first date was UFC 97 in Montreal two years ago and they’ve attended every Canadian event since.

UFC president Dana White gets bombarded with requests from fans each time he does a public Q&A. At a recent event, Peacock asked White if they could get married in the octagon. Absolutely, said White. The Hamilton couple kept in touch with the company, and with UFC 129 taking place so close to Hamilton, the date was set.

No word on if Lenne Hardt performed the wedding call or not.

I wondering how long this will last with the growth of the sport.

There is a threshold. We saw it with the near riot what Dana tweeted 300 tickets away. We are in the glory days of MMA. We have the most access to the widest range of fighters. In 10 years I doubt the next generation will be able to say that (i am assuming that the people that said the earth was a flat disc also screwed up about 2012).

I dunno. NASCAR (even though it’s not a real sport) has managed to maintain a pretty fan-friendly atmosphere despite having experienced exponential growth over the last ten years. I think Dana knows that keeping this kind of atmosphere prevalent in MMA is good business. But Leti is right, we are in the glory days right now and we should all enjoy it. As MMA fans we’re experiencing what it’s like to get in on the ground floor of a sport and it’s fuckin’ awesome.
