The Low Blow Episode 161: Mopping up UFC 118

Subo joins me for just over an hour of MMA talk as we break down the UFC 118 card from the Spike prelims to the main event. We talk about BJ Penn being over-hyped, Frankie Edgar being under-hyped, and Nate Diaz pillow punching his way to another solid victory. On the side, we also bring up how Strikeforce is evil (but never in the way we want them to be) and Japan is screwed. That and many more topics discussed in this episode of the Low Blow.

    no pop-up player? i liked that 1 :(

  • Tanhauser says:

    Stooooooooocktonnnnnnn boyyyyyyyyyy!

    Finally some lowblow action.

    You bitches.

  • agentsmith says:

I agree about the Ruediger/Lauzon matter. Trying to shake a guy’s hand literally seconds after you kicked his ass isn’t being sportsmanlike, it’s an extra little “in your FACE,” so it’s bullshit for Lauzon to act like he’s trying to be all diplomatic. Give the guy a minute, for fuck sakes.

  • glassjawsh says:

^ BJ Penn kissing Matt Hughes at UFC 46 = awesome; Kenny Florian crying and hugging Joe Stevenson at UFC 91 = weak ass shite

  • Nanook says:

Ahhh, this lack of the pop-up player really sucks! :-(

  • Tanhauser says:

Subo – how can you say strikeforce forces outcomes when the UFC lets sonnen fight silva again?

They want Shogun to win, and they want Sonnen to win.

    Even though he clearly lost.

  • subo says:

    A. The UFC in no way shape or form wanted Chael to win that first fight
    B. Shogun/Machida 1 was razor close and no one else was available
    C. Chael was up 40-35 going into the fifth round
    D. Nobody wanted to see Le/Smith II
    E. Shogun was “fed” to Chuck by Dana after the Coleman fight – not exactly a guy they banked on to carry the strap one day
    F. Strikeforce is shit

  • Tanhauser says:

    A. Sure they did. Dana doesn’t like Anderson because he doesn’t speak English and is very hard to manage. Dana would love a white bread redneck wrestler like Sonnen he could sell to the masses. Sonnen as champ would be the biggest seller in the UFC bar Brock. And the way he sold the first fight, you’re damn skippy Dana would be happier with Sonnen as champ, over Anderson Silva.

    B. I maintain that Machida won, even if it was a close fight. The judges gave it to him. There have been a lot of close fights in MMA history but fighters don’t just get instant rematches. Bottom line: Dana thought Shogun won, and Shogun is 20 times more marketable than Karate boy.

    C. You can be up on the cards all you want and when you get KO’d/Sub’d that means you LOST. Sonnen lost, and doesn’t deserve a title shot.

What he needs is a rematch with Maia to prove he’s working on his sub defense. But that ain’t gonna happen.

It’s like Chuck getting a rematch with Rich Franklin. Chuck has lost to KO’s over, and over just like Sonnen has lost to submissions over and over. I mean, Chuck looked great for most of the first round against Franklin too. Doesn’t mean he’s using his wrestling to offset that weak ass chin. That means dick.

    D. They knew Chuck was on the way out at that point. He’d already lost to Jardine and Jackson, and got a cheap ass win over Wanderlei due to some worthless ‘do nothing’ takedowns in the third.

Dana has always envisioned Shogun as the champ and he knew a win over chuck would help put him over.

Point is, if Dana thinks he can sell a guy and there it goes to a decision these days, there is gonna be a rematch. Forcing outcomes to make money.

Strikeforce is doing the same damn thing, and why not? If they don’t get some PPV draws soon they will fold and nobody wants that.

  • Swedish guy says:

    What about RSS/iTunes feed?!

  • godzillad says:

Maynard did not honestly beat Diaz in their rematch or Huerta.

The “if you don’t like ____ doing ____, then stop him from doing it” argument doesn’t work both ways. Don’t shit on Diaz’s striking for being ‘ineffective’ when you champion Maynard’s inert fucking wrestling. At least Nate makes your face look like someone held it under a tank tread while Gay’s “grappling” just makes you feel like you spent 15 minutes with a needy fat chick who desperately wants to feel their body on yours.

Sherk’s suspension was cut in half when the CSAC was run like shit. At the same hearning they cut James Toney’s suspension in half just to get him out of the room:

  • godzillad says:

What beating Dunham put on Sherk? They’re fighting this month. And Sherk would’ve handled Edgar had he decided to wrestle earlier:

And Ryan, Sherk hasn’t look different since his suspension; he’s lost two fights since then, both to the guys who’ve spent this calendar year as champions.

Nate Diaz vs. Lytle would look exactly like Nick Diaz vs. Lytle.

Nate would fuck up Alves and Johnson. Styles make fights.

  • Slappy san says:

    What he asked….

  • Capt.Shank says:

What happened to the itunes shows? They aren’t working at all right now.
