It looked like I spoke a bit prematurely when I shit all over That DREAM Promotion That Doesn’t Pay Fighters’s announcement that they would be returning for another big New Years Eve show. The good news: The event would not be happening if it wasn’t for GLORY, the promotional arm of Golden Glory. They’re the ones that recently pushed DREAM’s parent company FEG into bankruptcy in an attempt to get payment for all those fighters it screwed. GLORY will be bankrolling the entire show, and the event has nothing to do with the scuzzbags at FEG who were apparently the ones we should be blaming for all that non-payment.
So all of a sudden, you can feel way less guilty about supporting this event. In fact, you can feel downright good as this seems like the beginning of a Japanese combat sports takeover by GLORY, with 10 events planned for 2013.
As for details on the NYE event itself – it will be at Saitama Super Arena and will ‘bring back the high production value that DREAM originally had.’ So hopefully it will feature Bas Boon in a diaper banging on a giant taiko drum for 9 hours. The event will feature 13 MMA fights and 3 kickboxing fights, including some sort of kickboxing vs MMA matches. Thus far the only names attached to the event are Satoru Kitaoka, Hiroyuki Takaya, and Tatsuya Kawajiri. Good solid names, but thus far no different than the same old same old lineups that DREAM used to put together.
With GLORY in charge, it will be interesting to see how the rest of the lineup comes together and who they bring in. Last year’s DREAM NYE event (the amusingly named “Fight for Japan. How are you! New Year! 2011”) featured Fedor vs Satoshi Ishii, Shinya Aoki vs Satoru Kitaoka, another bantamweight tournament, and a bunch of pro wrestling. Cool I guess but it doesn’t hold a candle to the NYE events of old. What will we get this year? I am excite to find out!
