I doubt they do much damage but it sure does look emberassing. The judges probably give you some good points for it too.

Just as in Muay Thai the cut kick has more of a psychological effect on your opponent and the judges.
It scores technique points and makes the person who got their leg kicked from under them look like talentless chumps.

At my last grading I got hit with this. My right calf wasn't right for a month after. It's not the most damaging technique but no walk in the park either.
