If you were wondering how our campaign to harass Strikeforce into signing Roxanne Modafferi was going, here’s an update:
Mike Afromowitz, Strikeforce’s director of communications, today confirmed the organization’s interest in Modafferi, though he stressed any potential deal was far from done.
“There’s dialogue between Strikeforce and Roxanne’s manager,” Afromowitz said. “It’s only dialogue right now, though.”
Strikeforce’s interest comes on the heels of Modafferi’s recent open campaign to join the organization. The Japanese resident is currently ranked No. 3 in the 135-pound division by WAMMA.
Modafferi is currently riding a six-fight win streak, including victories over Vanessa Porto and WAMMA’s No. 2-ranked featherweight Marloes Coenen.
‘Dialog’ is good, but doesn’t really move things forward any from last week or even last month. But I suppose we shouldn’t be THAT impatient … Strikeforce just rolled out it’s first ‘next generation’ event a few weeks ago and this weekend’s Challenger series has gained most of it’s press from the single female fight on the card. So to say Strikeforce isn’t bullish on women would be a lie.
Perhaps they’re still trying to lock in Gina Carano before spreading any more ink around on women’s contracts? Whatever the reason, here’s hoping the next few weeks sees Strikeforce snapping up several of the top female names floating around right now. But I swear to fucking god, if they book more Kim Coutures or Karate Hotties instead, I’m gonna flip the fuck out.
