The UFC got a bit of heat from some fans for really trying to sell a revenge angle leading up to the Junior Dos Santos vs Frank Mir fight. Y’know, Dos Santos avenging his mentor Nogueira after Mir snapped his arm and all that. There was nothing to it at all – it was pretty much a pure UFC creation. And now it seems like they’re up to their ol promotin’ tricks again with Forrest Griffin vs Tito Ortiz. The UFC spoke to Forrest for a promo video and here’s what he said:
“A lot of people ask me. They say, ‘Forrest, it’s Tito’s retirement fight. If you lose to Tito, are you going to retire?’ If I lose to Tito, I’m going to retire from life. Seriously.”
Standard deadpan Forrest Griffin humor, right? Well, it looks like the UFC is taking the statement pretty cereal.
Chael Sonnen’s ‘Loser Leaves Town’ speech has also found its way into every single UFC 148 commercial as well, even though there’s no way he’ll actually retire if he loses. At least he seriously made that statement. In as serious a manner as he makes any statement, that is.
