Spike’s got our PPV prelims

Those worrying about all that alleged fussin’ and a feudin’ between Spike and the UFC can rest easy: they just slipped promise rings on eachother’s fingers and committed to showing 12 PPV prelims a year. That’s pretty much all of them, and now that Facebook is a viable option and ION was booed and hissed at, I think we know where any odd ducks will end up.

The first of the prelims will be in two weeks for UFC 126 and will feature Donald Cerrone vs Paul Kelly (the slobberknocker) and Chad Mendes vs Michihiro Omigawa (the sleeping pill). Unfortunately for everyone, we have to watch lay’n’prayer Chad Mendes exploit Japan’s inability to catch up in wrestling because Mendes is on his way to title contention. To be fair, Chad didn’t look bad against Javier Vasquez at WEC 52 but until he proves he can actually finish someone, I say good day to him, sir. Good day!

Did they discuss the “ratings” for the Facebook experiment?

  • agentsmith says:

^^ According to MMAPayout, they gained about 60,000 “likes” on Facebook.  But no word yet on the actual stream numbers.

  • frickshun says:

^^not as big a number as I hoped. But stream #’s will be more telling, I guess.

  • Omomatta says:

At least for me, it was a seamless stream. It didn’t time out whatsoever with any of the fights. I think they did a pretty good job.

  • agentsmith says:

Yeah, the stream was solid once I actually got it… cause for some fucking reason I was first given a replay of the Matt Wiman vs JIM Miller fight from the last Fight for the Troops event instead. I was confused as shit, cause Goldberg and Rogan were talking about how Jim took the fight on a week’s notice, and I’m like, “WTF happened to COLE Miller?!”

  • Omomatta says:

Did you accidentally click a link on the media player? I did that at the beginning.

  • agentsmith says:

The media player loaded, I clicked play and it gave me the wrong Miller. I didn’t even touch the scroll of other videos at the top, so god only knows how that happened.

  • fightlinker says:

Yeah 60k new likes ain’t bad, and you have to keep in mind the UFC already has nearly 5 million likes, so there’s a lot of people who were already subscribed and getting news about this. I’m sure when they announce the final tally for the Intrepid heros fund they’ll say something about how many viewers they had. Good thing about the internet – no need to guestimate based off those fuckign nielson boxes – you know exactly how many streams were going out.

  • FiveBoltMain says:

They got 2.5 million viewers. That’s more than what ESPN gets for an NBA game.

  • frickshun says:

^^If that’s true, it’s pretty fucking impressive for a SPORTING EVENT ON FACEBOOK!!

  • DaddyPants says:

i get all my media over the internet. i either stream it or download that shit later the same night. this is the way of the future. many people are ditching their cable tv for just a high speed internet connection, at least the intelligent ones are. the only thing that broadcast television has over streamed/downloaded content is the commercial breaks.

i expect to see more shows being streamed like this by the UFC, its a smart move. i just wish there was another way to see them other then fucking facebook. i refuse to join that site (its like world of warcraft for people with jobs). i just downloaded the prelims like all the other facebook haters off a tracker instead. hopefully zuffa will upgrade their servers and stream them on their own site one of these days, this way i will watch it legitimately.

  • agentsmith says:

Well it looked like it was the UFC’s media player embedded into the Facebook page, so does that mean it was running off Zuffa’s servers on the back end? I don’t know this website design shit, I just surf em.

  • frickshun says:

Daddypants–>that’s a pretty big chip on your shoulder. You could “borrow” someone else’s Facebook & choose to “like” the UFC. Why not watch it the same way I watch snuff films……LIVE??

  • DaddyPants says:

that’s not a chip on my shoulder, its my head. and that thing with my face on it that you previously thought was my head, that’s the chip. it can be confusing at times.

borrowing someone’s facebook account is brilliant. i will do this next time. feeling sort of dumb that it didn’t occur to me to do that before. dur.

  • FiveBoltMain says:

2.5 million on SPIKE TV, not FACEBOOK. The last SPIKE TV event was Marquadt vs Okami, and that got 1.2 million.

  • iamphoenix says:

    butters ruins everything.

  • DJ ThunderElbows says:

DP, can’t you create a fake one for a night? Or just not friend anyone but the UFC?

I also don’t use TV for media and love it. To be fair, I also don’t give a shit about the prelims for a FFTT card.

  • agentsmith says:

Yeah, next time the UFC does this, just create a Facebook account just for that.

  • Predator8u says:

good shits, it will make up for the lack of WEC’s.  but i’ll probaly still miss half of them (fuckin DVR)
