Shogun blows his knee out (again)

I don’t know what the fuck is up with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. It seems like the last two years of his life his body has been on a mission to betray him at every turn. First his arm snaps in half fighting Mark Coleman. Then his knee explodes … twice. I wonder what could be causing all these constant problems? Hmmmm.

Anyways, the long and short of the story is that Shogun ain’t gonna be fighting again any time soon, and that scraps the Iceman vs Shogun fight. Which sucks, because that’s the fight everyone wanted to see too. And now the search is on for an appropriate replacement. I’d have more faith in the UFC if the last time they were in a pickle they served Jardine up as a decent opponent for Liddell (the fact that Jardine won doesn’t make it any less lame of a booking). But maybe the result of that debacle plus the Lesnar vs Coleman matchup means they’ve learned from their mistakes.

Here’s a couple options as to who could replace Rua:

Dan Henderson: He’s pretty much the only top 10 light heavyweight fighter not already booked or injured. Although one has to wonder how well it’d sell considering Hendo has just lost two in a row, never mind another jump between the weight classes.

Ricardo Arona: This guy has been sitting on the sidelines since PRIDE went under. Everyone was expecting him to be fighting for DREAM or World Victory Road … the fact that he’s not makes me think he may be close to signing with the UFC.

Vitor Belfort: He wants back into the UFC, and it’s a battle that’d sell in the UK. Vitor’s been punting around there since he broke a suspension in the US. So as far as a one fight deal goes, it’s not a bad one.

Anyone else?

  • Pontus says:

Let him fight Big Nog for the HW title.

  • Ricardo Arona is out due to massive steroid usage. If he signs with the UFC, he will deflate until he looks like a tall rodent in board shorts.

  • It would be interesting if Chuck moved up to heavyweight. Kinda an ‘in yo face, couture’ too :-)

  • Stellar53 says:

Belfort will probably never be allowed to fight in the U.S. again because he fought out of the U.S. when he was suspended.

  • Dan Henderson is too dangerous. Imagine Chuck losing to a middleweight fighter who just lost to the champ of 185.
I’m sure they’ll dig up some grappler to make Chuck look good. I would have guessed Jardine rematch but hes booked aganist Wanderlei.

As for Shogun he should drop to middleweight. I dont agree with Rogan when he says that if you can drop a weight class you should. But in Shoguns case he can make it there easy. He looked pudgy and lacked cardio aganist Forrest Griffin.

  • Stellar: that’s why it’s a good fight … it’s in the UK. And if you can’t count on Chuck to beat belfort …….

  • Ross says:

I’m not too upset about this news. Chuck is stylistically a bad match-up for Shogun and he’d find it tough to recover from 0-2.

  • dragomort says:

Paulo Filho. To prove he’s not a prostitute!

  • Atom says:

RE: Belfort– I thought the UFC didn’t want to book fighters that were at odds with various U.S. A.C.’s because they needed the support of every commission they could get, but perhaps I’m just regurgitating what I’ve read elsewhere.

I don’t understand why the fact that all of the other LHW’s are booked means anything. JUST TEAR UP THE CONTRACTS! The UFC needs a decent opponent for Chuck MUCH more than they need one for Thiago, Rashad, Jardine, or Silva. I don’t want them to fuck with Ortiz/Machida, personally, but that also should be considered an option. When your biggest star of the last few years needs an opponent, you pull some god damn strings!

Paulo Filho makes some sense, especially considering he wants to move up anyway, but I doubt he has a big enough name to fill the hole. It sucks that they’ve already locked in Griffin/Rampage b/c of TUF, either of them could have been a possibility.

  • selfdestruco says:

Anderson F’n Silva! THIS is the fight that makes sense. If Anderson wins beats Chuck, it legitimizes him as the best p4p fighter with mainstream audience, and hopefully it will finally make him the star he should be. The UFC could chalk up the lose to Silva as just losing against the greater fighter in UFC History, and setup a Spider vs Rampage LHW fight.

If Chuck wins, he legitimately deserves the next shot at Rampage, and Silva doesn’t look bad because he moved up in weight.

  • selfdestruco says:

Oh, not to mention this could be the biggest fight in UFC History!

    T I M B O E S T C H

  • Mike Rome says:

Rashad is a possibility, I’m sure he’d rather have a big fight than Thiago. They could also give this to Houston Alexander if he scores a big KO against Irvin.

Nog is intriguing…for reasons said above, and also because down the line a Lesnar/Chuck match is a huge money deal. I highly doubt Chuck is ever going to beat Quinton anyway.

  • I guess you have to say that Wilson Gouveia is an option at this point, especially with everyone else already being locked up in fights.

  • Stellar53 says:

The fight is in the UK but that would mean the UFC going against the Nevada Athletic Commission, I just don’t see it happening… about Chuck vs. Thiago Silva?

  • That would be terrible

    No selling power
    No upside if chuck wins
    MASSIVE downside if chuck loses

    Worst idea ever.

  • kentyman says:

Hmm, why does that sound so familiar…

  • UFC will give chuck someone he can beat on and look fantastic

  • hmm, how about Soko? or Thaigo Silva? Houston Alexander, maybe even.

  • Popetastic says:

    Arona. Sign him.

    Or little Nog.

  • Matt says:

I think Hendo is the best fight. If Chuck stops Hendo it provides a major selling point for a Rampage/Chuck rematch as the whole Chuck did what Rampage couldn’t do in five rounds.
At the same time Hendo is dangerous and I really believe he would beat Chuck. But Hendo has only lost to the LHW and MW champions so its not a terrible loss for Chuck.
Other option would be to scrap the Evans/Silva bout and bump one to this fight. It really doesn’t matter Chuck sells PPVs and whom ever he fights people will watch.

  • RoB says:

    Kimbo Slice………ftw!!!!!!!!!

  • derreck says:

Brandon Vera should move down to LHW. He was rumored to be returning then anyway

  • they already got him lined up against Werdum :-/

  • Zurich says:

How about Sokodjou? A nice grappler with no chin.. perfect for Chuck.

  • Mobb Deep says:

I agree with the Anderson Silva idea. Fuck Okami and lets have us one awesome fight, with Spiderman melting the Iceman in awesome fashion.
