Sean Sherk just wants to be loved

Looks like it wasn’t BJ Penn’s words that got into Sean Sherk’s head. It was the words of all the MMA fans around the world calling him a one-dimensional snore-fest:

Following the fight, many questioned Sherk’s strategy to remain standing with Penn. “I wanted to show everyone that I can box,” said Sherk. “People want to see diversity in this sport. I’m not a one-dimensional fighter like people think I am, and I came here with something to prove.

“I wanted to gain respect back from the fans, first of all. Secondly, I wanted to give the fans something they paid for. People paid a lot of money to come see this fight, so I wanted to hopefully re-establish myself I guess is what I’m trying to say.”

All of a sudden Sean is having a Tim Sylvia moment … he’s dropped the douche armour long enough for us to glimpse the sadness and hurt that’s been under there for so long. This is a Sean Sherk that desperately wants to be loved by the fans, to be respected as a well rounded fighter. It kinda sucks that it was that Sean Sherk that BJ beat the shit out of. I was looking forward to Lay-n-Pray Sherk getting his commuppance.

  • Alex says:

I think that’s a contender for header image of the year

  • yeah i wanted sherk to win dammit!

  • Joon4s says:

“I wanted to show everyone that I can box”

It’s pretty fucking hard to show that you can box when you really can’t.

  • RoB says:

This just in fightlinker graduatated from tito’s school of sounding retarded, “It kinda sucks that it was that Sean Sherk that BJ beat the shit out of” i rest my case

  • rickards says:

^ wow someone trying to be an asshole, but turn out looking like a jackass.

two different sherk personalities.. crappy sherk shows up.. classic sherk stays home–ah fuck-it, never mind

  • godzillad says:

For all we know Sean just may have BJ’s number on the ground. Not like we’ll ever find out though.

  • RL Dookiefuck says:

Sherk would be the best striker in the lightweight division if only he knew how to defend a straight jab and didn’t have a 24″ wingspan and a head that attracts knees like a magnet.

  • Teufel says:

Well, he proved that he’s an effective punching bag.

  • Mike_N says:

RL has to be the mid-season favorite for 2008 Comment of the Year. Nice work, man.

  • andres says:

I dunno I like sherk I love his lightweight fights the first 2 or 3 rounds are sick I love his slams his takedowns are great I think he hurt his hand in that fight so he couldn’t really throw

I love watching the florian fight nice slams needs to work on passing the guard though

  • Márcio says:

I kind of feel bad for the guy, everyone seems to be treating this like it was the only positive test in mma history and we all know that shit ain’t true.
Enough is enough, time to let the man go on to make a living for him and his family.

  • P W says:

rickards: Ahh don’t worry, we’re jackals, picking on people in general and Ryan and Jake in particular is what we do best!

  • Nachtfalter says:

Sherk really thought his pathetic boxing would be more entertaining than his wrestling (which is pretty fucking awesome)? Do steroids really hurt your brain THAT badly?

I know everyone is always shitting on Sherk because of the Franca fight but personally, he impressed the hell out of me in that one. Sure, he was probably roided up badly and sure, he couldn’t do anything meaningful on the ground, but his slams, his takedowns and his passing ability really were as good as it gets and, to me at least, more entertaining than the stupid shadow boxing bullshit he pulled against BJ.

  • I’m willing to give Sherk another chance.
Now if only there were some drugs that could make your arms longer…

  • asdfasd says:

Poor Sherk. Getting his belt back AND showing fans that he can box are mutually exclusive. You want your belt back, don’t box. You want to box, you don’t get the belt.

  • kentyman says:

    Matt, your link is wrong.
