(above: Chris Wilson looking tough and ready. Can you see the determination in his eyes? I’m still trying to figure out the meaning of that strange tattoo on his chest though.)
When I was writing up and article for BetUS on which underdogs had a chance of winning, I was trying to get into the mind of Joe Silva to figure out what the fuck was up with him booking Chris Wilson against Jon Fitch. I figured either it was a gift booking for Fitch as he waited for his title shot, or Silva knew something about Wilson we didn’t. Then I read an interview with Wilson and remembered that he’s a replacement for Akihiro Gono. Which means he’s basically just a sacrificial lamb. Interesting quote from a Cage Potato interview:
Tell me about how you were offered the fight against Jon Fitch after Akihiro Gono got injured. I heard you were on vacation when you got the call.
Yeah, I had just arrived in Hawaii for a vacation. Obviously I was ecstatic and I was ready to do it, but I wasn’t in fight mode. I wasn’t completely out of shape, but I wasn’t training for a big-time fight like this. But I took the fight, so I can’t complain. Who’s going to pass on that opportunity?
Did that kind of ruin your vacation?
Yeah. Honestly, it did. I went from training every other day to training twice a day. My wife is seven months pregnant and she and my four-year-old son were with me and I wasn’t able to spend a lot of time with them, so it threw a wrench in our vacation. There was a lot of money down the tubes in that sense.
Jeez, won’t Chris feel stupid when he loses to Fitch anyways? Someone should have told him that he’s not being brought in to win anyways. Oh and please spare me with the “Chris Wilson is a better opponent than you give him credit for” comments. I’m sure he’s really great. But he’s still going to lose.
