Nelson bitches about standup and ‘politics’

(pic by Esther, awesome as usual. You can kinda see the ghost of the cage she’s shooting through, which I think adds a neat effect)

I haven’t done a very good job of bitching out the bullshit standup that occurred during the Nelson / Arlovski fight. I just don’t see what the point is complaining about the shit job that referees sometimes do. I think we’ve all come to the realization that a ref can do the worst job in the universe and still keep his job. But I expose myself to one teenage girl and I lose my job at the abortion clinic. The world is fucking unfair, but that’s just how things are. So why rage against the machine?

Still, I should have at least mentioned what happened for posterity’s sake. Long story short, Roy Nelson got fucked over by the ref. He had Andrei Arlovski in side control and was prepping to mount him when they were stood back up … this is seconds after Nelson was working a kimura to boot.

Here’s Roy talking about the situation, and past a frustrated comment regarding being the dude who was supposed to lose, he mainly took the ref thing in stride. But things go a bit further than that … he found out that Arlovski’s camp might have known about the fight weeks before he did:

“I felt like I was fighting two people,” Nelson said about the referees last Saturday night. “I would fight for Elite, it all depends where we’re fighting at and who’s the ref. If we were fighting in Vegas, and I know the refs and they actually know what a Kimura is, that kind of makes for a big difference. Cause the reason they’re telling me to work for a better position and you’ve got someone in a submission, usually they have to get out.”

Still the overall situation could go even deeper because the former IFL champ says that Arlovski may have had prior knowledge about their fight, giving him more time to prepare.

“We were having dinner afterwards and Andrei’s guys were coming over and they were just talking about how they had been studying me and watching film and stuff and they’ve been doing it for over three weeks, and I was like, ‘huh?” Nelson stated. “And I didn’t say anything to them, but it makes you kind of wonder, three weeks? I thought you were on the same (one) week plan that I was? When you see all the politics all unfold and that made it very interesting.”

The original word was that Affliction and EliteXC had been working towards a deal for a few weeks before the event. Was there a general consensus between EliteXC, Affliction, and Arlovski that Nelson would be used instead of Barnett, and they just waited for Barnett to disappear in Japan before announcing the switcheroo?

Okay, I know that’s entering serious tinfoil hat territory, but with the way news has been going lately I’m starting to wonder if the UFC isn’t beaming these conspiracy theories directly into my brain somehow. The only way to stop these transmissions may be to kill Mike Goldberg and eat his eyeballs. His hypnotizing, delicious eyeballs.

Updated: Fixed all references to Ben Rothwell. Sorry, I get them confused. All fat IFL vets look the same to me.
