Rich Franklin is underpaid

It’s hard to tell where Rich Franklin is getting raped worse … in the ring or on his paycheck. Sure, I’d get in the ring with Anderson Silva for 45k, but that’s because I don’t already have 45k in my bank account. I imagine Rich probably has 100+ grands squirreled away in his bank account, so all of a sudden the motivation to do this doesn’t seem so great:

“Hey Rich, wanna get your ass kicked by Anderson Silva again?”
“Mmmm, sure.”
“It’ll be extra embarrassing because it’ll be the second time in a row.”
“Plus we’re gonna do the fight in Cincinnati so all your friends and family can see it happen”
“Oh, and it’ll be on your wife’s birthday. Nice little kicker there, huh?”
“And although statistically you’re pretty much guaranteed to lose, try not to … because your career will be fucked if you do.”
“Hey, on second thought, can I change my mind about this fight?”
“Haha, that’s funny. No!”

“How to handle the UFC’s non-disclosure of fighter salaries has been a huge problem for me and other journalists. I have long believed the fighters should get every cent they can for what they do. But I also don’t begrudge the promoters making a profit. There was one major UFC fighter who was telling me about a contract that would pay him millions. But when he fought, his salary was listed as far less than $100,000. He didn’t want to talk publicly about his contract for fear of irritating White.”;_ylt=Age3lZPuixfl6KT95B5wHI05nYcB?slug=ki-101607mailbag&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

I think Rich is the fighter that Iole is hinting at here.

  • Zurich says:

I hope the UFC at least ponied up the cash to fix his nose, again. Poor Rich :(

  • steve24 says:

That old teaching salary is starting to look more and more attractive.

  • Tommy says:

I think Rich was dumb to take the fight. There’s no dishonor in not fighting someone you know you can’t beat. It’s not like Silva was running his mouth or Rich had to defend his family, then you do what you gotta, win or lose. As for Rich’s financial situation the only way he has 100k in his account is if that idiot’s guide book did real well. This is a guy who when he was a champ was trying to auction off 10 minutes of phone time with himself. It’s been all downhill for him since then and who knows how much he keeps having to spend on his nose?

  • intenso says:

“There’s no dishonor in not fighting someone you know you can’t beat.”

    uh…sure there is.

  • We’ve talked about the magic money on this site a lot … but there’s just as many fighters saying they aren’t getting magic money as say they are. So long as Rich’s listed price is so low, I’m gonna continue to mock it.

  • steve24 says:

Fighters want to make more money they need to move to LHW or HW. That’s where the money is at.

  • Shaun says:

“Fighters want to make more money they need to move to LHW or HW. That’s where the money is at.”

    Tell that to Keith Jardine.

  • Tommy says:

Intenso, even Sun Tzu said there’s no reason to stay and fight an enemy you know you cannot defeat. Your enemies #1 goal is to kill you so by you escaping to live another day you have in fact defeated your enemy. (and that’s in actual war) Did he have no honor then as well?

  • Mike says:

Uh, He just said in a press interview 3 weeks ago he is making 500k in purse this year and 500k in advertising money. Don’t worry about him too much. You should know enough by now about UFC salary to know this isn’t close to what he’s making.

  • Atom says:

Sounds like Mike (#10) confirms my suspisions about Iole’s comments.(#1)

  • steve24 says:

Keith Jardine is doing just fine trust me after defeating Chuck. Plus, he is still probably on a TUF contract.

  • Beau says:

He would have made 90K if he won. Too bad he didn’t.

  • micjasbro says:

“There’s no dishonor in not fighting someone you know you can’t beat.”

But he thought he could beat him. He took the fight because Dana, Gurgel, and everyone close to him said he wasn’t mentally focused, and he actually believed he could’ve done better, and wanted to prove to himself that he could, or that the first time wasn’t a fluke.

  • Tommy says:

Well I can’t argue with that mic. Yet I would like to know what the hell Rich was smoking that lead him to believe he could beat Silva. Look at your fights then look at his. No comparison. I would love to know what was going through Rich’s head when Silva grabbed the back of his neck and Rich got that ‘just took a hit of crack look.’

  • Yeah i’d be pretty pissed with my friends if they fed me to the wolves like that. If I was Rich, I wouldn’t have gotten back into the octagon before going off to Thailand and learning some new shit while an awesome 80’s rock montage song played.

  • dignan says:

Rich could’ve made close to 100k if he won, which I don’t think is too bad considering he got slaughtered the last time, and hasn’t looked impressive in either of his last two fights.

I think he is a pretty honorable guy considering all of the pressure this fight put on him, with a smaller size cheque at the end if he didn’t win. Not too many guys seem as classy as Rich does.

Fightlinker: When are you going to blog about that scrotum Jorge Gurgel. They couldn’t have given any more love to that numbskull if they tried on the PPV.

He has 2 English degrees, he is a fan favorite, he puts it all out there for the crowd, his parents are physicists…who gives a shit. He is a mouthy little shit know it all that looked like the elephant man when his fight was over.

Gurgel has reached #1 on my punch on site list, followed by:

    #2. Kalib Starnes
    #3. Gary Bettman
    #4. Rosie O’Donnell

  • intenso says:

We’re not talking about warfare, we’re talking about mma. Saying you can’t beat somebody and won’t even try would make you a pussy.

And…of course Franklin believed he could beat Silva!! People that become professional fighters do not think the same way that the rest of us think. You do not get to that level by doubting yourself or thinking about your limitations. That’s why they are they and we are internet fagets.

  • dignan says:

    It’s spelled faggots.

  • kentyman says:

I’d like to see a montage of all of his nose reconstructions with “You’re second best… around!” playing in the background.

  • intenso says:

    dignan, stfu faget.

  • Jake says:

    Did You Know?

did you know that “Faget” is a town in western Romania, and has a population of over 7,000?

  • I love it when people don’t know how to spell faggit

  • intenso says:

this post is filled with wanton fagetry.

  • I honestly don’t know what i’d do with my days without the entertainment in the comments section.

  • dignan says:

“I love it when people don’t know how to spell faggit”

    fucking awesome.

  • operator says:

If Rich would have passed on a title shot he would have hurt his career worse than a loss so of course he took the fight. I wonder how many more fights he has left on his contract and I wonder if he will be worth more after his losses in Dana’s eyes. If not then he should follow Babalu who is aparently making double the money now than he was before getting canned by ufc.

  • intenso says:

What does Babalu have that Ace doesn’t….hmmm….it’s something. Oh yeah, Babalu is a bad motherfucker and Ace is a lame knee-eating dork.

  • I’m pretty sure if you opened up the vault in the bank where Babalu’s money was kept, a couple of moths would fly out and that’s it.

  • operator says:

Babalu got his ass kicked twice by the same dude too. Kicked in the head and knocked the fuck out. Shit happens

  • anderson says:

damn…those are some big ass tittays.
