“Take a look at what I’m wearing, people. You think anybody wants a roundhouse kick to the face while I’m wearing these bad boys? Forget about it”
If it slipped your mind that “Strikeforce Challengers 14” is totally going to happen this Friday night in the bustling metropolis of Cedar Park, Texas, try not to beat yourself up about it. I mean hey, it’s a Challengers show. And much like how you got your wife/girlfriend/Realdoll a half-assed V-Day card at the last minute on Monday, Strikeforce finalized their own card the same day… with a grand total of 7 fights on it. To put that in perspective, “Challengers 13” had 17 fights, and the previous three had 12 each. Sounds like Scott Coker almost forgot about it too.
Anyways, in the main event, rising lightweight prospect Lyle “Fancy Pants” Beerbohm returns from crushing cans in the wilderness to take on seasoned veteran Pat Healy. Beerbohm has enjoyed a fair amount of attention for a guy who’s still in the lower levels of the sport, partly thanks to his 15-0 undefeated record, and partly due to his (insert Jake/South Park singing voice here) epic tale of triumph over personal demons. But like many perfect records in MMA (and especially in boxing), it’s not quite as impressive when you really examine it, and Healy is his most experienced and maybe toughest opponent to date.
Also on the main card: WEC washout Carlo Prater will meet Bryan Travers at a 160-lb catchweight, Randy Couture’s son takes on some other noob, two dudes I’ve never heard of meet at a 150-lb catchweight, and welterweight Erik Apple returns from a 15-month layoff to face Ryan Larson. You may or may not want to miss this shit, folks.
Kickoff is at 11PM ET/PT on Showtime, or some time the next morning/afternoon on the interwebs for us thieving pirates.
