I’m a happy subscriber to the UFC’s video demand system … for about 10 bucks a month I’ve got access to a shitload of fights – including the prelim fights from events – which to me is a pretty damn good deal. Now ProElite is getting in on this shit by offering their own video on demand service. I’ve only been playing around with it for a few hours but I’ve already got a pretty big complaint.
The service is stream-only. While this saves ProElite the hassle of dealing with a DRM system like the UFC does, this also makes things ultra-annoying because the streams are constantly buffering … not just a little, but A LOT. I’d say over 2 minutes of watching a video, it’s stopped 5 or 6 times for 3-10 seconds each stop. I don’t think I have to tell you how fucking annoying that shit is. You couldn’t pay ME to watch an event like this.
If they manage to get the streaming issues fixed (you can check how it works for you … they’re offering some ShoXC fights for free right now), then there’s a couple other things I’m going to wait and see before I’m willing to pay the 13 bucks a month for this service:
- How fast they update the service with events that have just happened
- If they’re gonna stop being lazy about recent events and split them up into individual fights.
- If they’re going to get the rights to show fights from the Strikeforce / EliteXC co-promotions and CBS shows.
Past that I’m a big fan of video on demand, so if they fix the brutal streaming issues I’ll probably sign up for this. I know a lot of people are big torrent fans, and I am too. But even torrents don’t give you easy access to the individual fights of a lot of guys who may be fighting on any given weekend.
