Phil Baroni is a dick

Steve Cofield emailed me this and asked me if I thought Phil Baroni was a dick because of it. And yeah, Phil is a dick for doing what he did in the video. ESPN reporter Paul Howard did the standard radio-jock thing every jock does when they’re around fighters: he asked to get put into a choke hold. Normally the whole point of the skit is to let the fighter choke you till you pass out and flop around on the ground like a fish out of water. But Paul chickened out about 5 seconds into the whole thing and tapped. And tapped. And tapped some more. Did Phil Baroni let go? I think the answer is pretty obvious, but you can see it for yourself above.

Now originally I was a bit torn on whether I thought Phil was a dick for not letting the hold go … it didn’t really seem like too much of a big deal, but I’m a big believer of the ‘sanctity’ of the tap. If you agree before doing something that tapping means stop, then tapping means stop. That even goes for goofball radio guys who may or may not deserve several extra seconds.

Phil Baroni follows in the fine tradition of guys who take shit too far, which includes Forrest Griffin, who “>broke a journo’s leg with an intentionally brutal kick during a fluff skit. See, that’s why I’m not down with this shit … these guys are used to going hard and training with other guys who are in good shape and can defend stuff. But when you choke a 40 year old radio DJ or kick some geek who doesn’t know how to take a kick, shit pops and breaks and people get hurt.<

he’s a dick. that’s his gimmick. it’s not a pejorative when applied to phil baroni.

calling phil baroni a dick is like calling butterbean fat.

  • Dr. Gonzo says:

He eventually let it go. He didn’t wait till he was out. No foul. If Phil waited till dude was out it would be dirty

  • Elfenstein says:

what was wrong about this ?

sanctity of the tap – — wohoo – gonna go all way of the warrior on us `?

  • garth says:

    wow, you’re stupid elfenstein.

  • Captain says:

He didn’t even pass out. I bet Phil let up on the pressure. Regardless, Phil is a dick but as indicated before, that’s his role. I am sure he would agree with it.

Is there a video of Forrest breaking dude’s leg? I missed that.

    it wasnt that bad.

i am surprised to see that phill is wearing a koscheck brand Mar shirt. I didnt think anybody wore Mar or even knew what Mar was.

  • Iain says:

I’d never heard that Forrest Griffin story before. When did that take place?

  • #1 Jackal says:

    Forrest kick

    The after math

I read in a magazine that the guy agreed to let Forrest kick him becuase the guy was late for an interview with Forrest and that messed up Forrest whole day of training and interviews.

  • godzillad says:

    1. I didn’t know Baroni was familiar with submissions LOLZ!1

    2. If you’re stupid enough to tell ANYONE to put a choke on you, you deserve to be choked unconscious like Richard Belzer. Would you ask LT to sack you for a football commercial? Would you ask Cael Sanderson to suplex you for a wrestling commercial? Would you let Clements throw a fastball at you for a baseball commercial?

The man willingly gave another human being permission to restrict blood flow to his brain and squeeze his windpipe, Baroni should have put him to sleep for being such a dumbass.

  • godzillad says:

There was something on Raw Vegas TV where they watched Forrest train for Ramirez. The retard host was like ”Hey, world class athlete, kick me in the leg!”. Forrest obliged. MMA is no fucking joke. You don’t run in the Dayton track during the 99th lap just like you don’t tell a high-level combat sports athlete to perform an offensive maneuver on you.

Forrest kicking dude in the leg. And there’s a big difference between running onto the Daytona track and having an MMA guy take shit WAY too far during a little interview game. It’d be like filming a bit on a football player and having him destroy you instead of just lightly tackle you. It’s a fucking DICK thing to do, and not letting go when someone taps is a DICK move too … the ‘sanctity’ of the tap is for practical safety, not some retarded lofty warrior ideal.

  • Beau says:

Talk about pussification of this website. The guy was fine the whole time. He wasn’t even turning red or anything. Yeah, Baronia held the choke, but he wasn’t squeezing hard enought to make the guy pass out. It looked to me like they were just messing around, the guy immediately started laughing about it when Phil let go. You shoved your tampon way too far up your vagina this week if you think this is a big deal in any way at all.

  • godzillad says:

Asking someone to do something that is harmful to you is a DICK thing to do to yourself.

  • MadMan says:

    Baroni’s more of a turd than a dick :)

  • el feo XIII says:

    Baroni – living the gimmick

  • toolverine says:

    Also, Pineapple Penn versus Pulver.

  • Alex says:

I think if you’re sparring or something then you should always respect the tap. But if you’re just embarrassing some radio douche? All bets are off 😀

  • Im surprised Baroni even knew how to pull off a RNC. It obviously wasn’t very good cause that guy should have been out right after he started to tap.

  • andres says:

    Fuck it! Choke the bitch

Why would he pussie out especaily to phil baroni now that dudes one of my heros and everyone should know by now that foo don’t fuck around if you tellm to choke you foos gonna choke you out hahahahahahahaha!

  • operator says:

Phil Baroni’s word obviously doesn’t mean shit. Forrest is an asshole no doubt but I actually think that was an accident he just kicked him too hard during a stupid stunt. I think he is more guilty of being careless while Phil just flat out lied to the guy.

  • D-Rock Dizzle Jones says:

nothing wrong with that. It was all in good fun. Who hasn’t been choked out for fun?

  • Mike_N says:

When fighters hold a choke too long in actual fights, I can understand it. I don’t condone it, but I can at least make excuses for it: a fighter gets his blood boiling a bit and doesn’t let go, or he’s had an opponent tap and the referee missed it, or whatever.

But shit like this is just wrong: it was wrong for Forrest to do it, and it’s wrong for Baroni to do it. Martial arts teachers and coaches probably show off hundreds of demonstrations a year, and if it’s wrong for them to choke someone out when they’re displaying technique, then why is it okay when Forrest or Baroni do it? It doesn’t matter whether the guy was a prick or a shock jock or whatever.

  • godzillad says:

”if it’s wrong for them to choke someone out when they’re displaying technique, then why is it okay when Forrest or Baroni do it?”

Show me the part of the video where the guy asks Baroni to show him the technique of applying the choke. You can’t, can you? They’re proving a point by kicking stupid internet hosts or choking DJs. MMA is not a joke. They are dangerous human beings who train for hours and hours a day to inflict damage on another person. Why in the blue hell would you ask them to hurt you? That is absolutely retarded. Would that guy do a commercial with Jack Hannah and ask him to wrap an Anaconda around his neck too?

  • DannyP72 says:

Baroni always fights it to the end instead of tapping to a choke.

Baroni is awesome and always will be.

  • vinhthekid says:

i need to echo that firstly it wasn’t that bad, as either baroni doesn’t know how to choke for shit or he released pressure on the choke,

i’m betting on the pressure bit.

was it a dick move? hells yeah, but was it really that bad with the shock jock lying on the floor? no.

secondly, please jeebus don’t tell me i was the only one who was laughing so hard i almost pissed my pants.

  • andres says:

    I laughed hella haha

Godzillad you speak the truth dangerous people shouldn’t be allowed to be around regular joes that’s why I don’t go to school hahaha

  • Elfenstein says:

    @garth, rofl
@fightlinker – sanctity of the tap – priceless .. (too much SM lately and it got out of hand ? )

  • Captain says:

Glad to see people callin Ryan out on his pussified ranting.

As for my pussified ranting, Forrest is fuckin cocksucking bully. Didn’t even look like dude knew he was going to get kicked nor did he appear to be in any kind of stance to reasonably decide to unleash that kind of kick on him (unless you just want to hurt him cause you’re a bully). I hope Page knocks that monkey-looking hillbilly out so we can see him ball and sprint off to the locker rooms again.

  • godzillad says:

”Didn’t even look like dude knew he was going to get kicked”

Yes, because it isn’t like the guy asked Forrest to kick him or anything.

  • Ted Dibiase says:

    that wasnt all that bad…

he shoulda showed him the naked near choke

  • I think Baroni was surprised that the guy didn’t fall asleep immediately and thought that if he held it a second longer the DJ would go out just after he started tapping. Then after each tap he had the same thought, until he realized that either the guy has the strongest neck in the world or his RNC ability is at level 0…

The Long-Island Bad-Ass didn’t hold it too long, so I don’t think this is the thing that makes him a douche to ya Ryan. His general demeanor, behavior, steroid-positive testing, and shitty skillsets seem to have clenched your sphincter to the point where even general shit irks you.

As a New Yorker, I totally agree that he’s a dick, though :)

  • That DJ is lucky Baroni has zero knowledge of submissions. Baroni is such a douche that it hurts my ears when I have to listen to his stuttering lisp dribbling out profanities in interviews. It amazes me that his mouth is the only thing that has kept him from the undercard of some local show held in conjunction with the town fair. He has managed to remain the exact same fighter as he was in the early UFC 40’s (some would argue worse).

  • KillerPMS says:

I totally agree with the sanctity of the tap. Sure the DJ agreed to the RNC but they both agreed that it would end with a K.o or a TAP!

Forrest is a douchbag for breaking that Poindexter’s leg. I thought he was cooler than that. Shame.
