Steve Cofield emailed me this and asked me if I thought Phil Baroni was a dick because of it. And yeah, Phil is a dick for doing what he did in the video. ESPN reporter Paul Howard did the standard radio-jock thing every jock does when they’re around fighters: he asked to get put into a choke hold. Normally the whole point of the skit is to let the fighter choke you till you pass out and flop around on the ground like a fish out of water. But Paul chickened out about 5 seconds into the whole thing and tapped. And tapped. And tapped some more. Did Phil Baroni let go? I think the answer is pretty obvious, but you can see it for yourself above.
Now originally I was a bit torn on whether I thought Phil was a dick for not letting the hold go … it didn’t really seem like too much of a big deal, but I’m a big believer of the ‘sanctity’ of the tap. If you agree before doing something that tapping means stop, then tapping means stop. That even goes for goofball radio guys who may or may not deserve several extra seconds.
Phil Baroni follows in the fine tradition of guys who take shit too far, which includes Forrest Griffin, who “>broke a journo’s leg with an intentionally brutal kick during a fluff skit. See, that’s why I’m not down with this shit … these guys are used to going hard and training with other guys who are in good shape and can defend stuff. But when you choke a 40 year old radio DJ or kick some geek who doesn’t know how to take a kick, shit pops and breaks and people get hurt.<
