Overeem out of Strikeforce HWGP for no good frigging reason

As if losing half the interesting fights on the next UFC card wasn’t piss off enough, now the Strikeforce Heavyweight Tournament has been rendered impotent with the removal of Alistair Overeem. Why? Because Overeem and Zuffa got into a pissing match, and the fans got caught in the golden stream. Here’s Alistair’s side:

Overeem today revealed on MMA Fighting’s “The MMA Hour” that the promotion requested he return to action against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva (16-2 MMA, 3-1 SF) on Sept. 10. However, the Dutch striker said he asked for more time and preferred an October booking.

With the company planning for a September event to host the promotion’s heavyweight grand prix semifinal bouts, some obvious tension was built. Overeem said the company threatened his release even before today’s official announcement.

“What’s going to happen next, I don’t know,” Overeem told MMA Fighting. “I’ve had some threats of cutting me out of the tournament if I don’t participate. I don’t know if they’re going to do it.”

And here’s Dana White confirming that Overeem is out of the tournament, with Daniel Cormier replacing him:

“Sept. 10 was the date Showtime wants us to go, so it’s the date we’ve got to go,” White said. “It’s unfortunate that Alistair is unavailable, but situations like this are why there are alternates in the tournament.”

“Overeem is under contract, and when his pinky toe heals up, we’ll get him another fight,” White said.

There’s a lot of lameness to go around. You may remember the year and a half Alistair Overeem was decidedly difficult to pin down for a Strikeforce title defense. This reeks of more of the same. Could Overeem fight in September? Yeah. But he ‘prefers’ October. So September won’t happen. FUCK YOU, OVEREEM.

And on the UFC’s side, who’s bright idea was it to shoehorn the next round of the Heavyweight grand prix into a specific date without talking to the four participants? And who decided it was no big deal to replace Overeem with Daniel Cormier and just roll on without the #1 seed / goddamn champion in the tournament like it’s no big deal? Sounds like a Dana White move. An egotistical, tug-o-war, political battle Dana move. FUCK YOU, DANA.

All I know is that after a month where half the fights we were supposed to get got canceled, it’s very uncool for the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix to get borked over something that easily could have been fixed if both parties were willing to be fucking reasonable. Screw you both, guys. I’m going home.

Is Alistair trying to play hardball with the UFC? Wonder if he will end up in the UFC when this is all done or if he will get the ban hammer?

  • Mixed Martial Adam says:

I can’t imagine that Dana (even as stubborn as he is) would force Overeem to fight in September if he wasn’t ready or injured – this sounds like more of a Showtime move to me. Dana has to know how valuable Overeem is to the tournament and therefore you would think he would make some sort of concession to keep Alistair in the bracket as the whole thing goes down the tube without him.

That is unless Dana wants the whole thing to go down the tube and hurt Strikeforce/Showtime’s brand even more…

  • Garp says:

Adam’s right. UFC makes fighters happy by paying for their injuries, which the fighters are taking full advantage of. Strikeforce pisses fighters off, pure and simple.

  • glassjawsh says:

wouldn’t mind seeing overeem v del rosario and then kharitonov after he loses and then the winner of the gp (Josh barnett)

  • CAP says:

I would like them to drop him in the UFC but that’s not a suitable outcome after standing up to the Zuffa brass so that is probably a long shot. There will be plenty more dirt to come from this story I’m sure.

  • G Funk says:

Reem vs. Dos Santos would be tits.

  • frickshun says:

^^No. He’d get fucking murdered by JDS. You guys are truly blind to skill levels across different orgs.

  • Reverend Clint says:

the reem can cycle off in september, dana. Jeez give a guy a break

  • SHORT_BUS says:

Roid cycle, wouldn’t be clean in September.

  • DJ ThunderElbows says:

And on the UFC’s side, who’s bright idea was it to shoehorn the next round of the Heavyweight grand prix into a specific date without talking to the four participants?

Um … The guys in the quote you pulled who used to push around SF and never even  wanted to be in business with Zuffa?

“Sept. 10 was the date Showtime wants us to go, so it’s the date we’ve got to go,”

I think this is Showtime fucking with Zuffa and/or them showing Overeem how little they care about him after the Werdum performance.  Either way they don’t give a fuck about this tourney.

  • Gloeck says:

“and when his pinky toe heals”….there’s no way to read that without sensing the contempt. Dana is such a wanna be tough guy its not even funny—he’s the one that needs to cycle off.

  • DJ ThunderElbows says:

Additionally, Overeem could just be crazy and/or juicing.

  • glassjawsh says:

in one week i lost my boner for both ubereem and meisha tate. when BJ loses to carlos condit ill officially be out of mma crushes

  • frickshun says:

^^There’s always Ebersole. How can you not love that guy?? CARTWHEEL KIXXX!!

  • Symbul says:

I like how Dana shifts it all on Showtime. Such a smooth operator.

  • kwagnuth says:

Yeah fuck this tourney it has gone to shit and will be meaningless when it is all said and done. This debauchery is about as meaningful as guys trying to fight their way onto the TUF show. Battle of the roid monkeys, has beens, women beaters and chubby 205er. Wow I just jumped off the Fedor bandwagon I feel a little ashamed. Have I no loyalty?
