Oliveira vs Lentz now No Contest

Pennsylvania sure knows how to get shit done. Most commissions need three months and a public hearing before refusing to admit anything untoward went down at one of their events. Not only were members of the Pennsylvania commish freaking out with the rest of us when their ref missed an illegal knee from Charles Oliveira that led to a win over Nik Lentz at UFC on Versus 4 last weekend, but they’ve already overturned the result of the fight:

“After review of the tape of this contest and after consultation with the referee the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission has ruled that the results of this match will be changed to a no contest,” the statement read.

“This change is a direct result from an accidental kick to the head by Mr. Oliveira to a grounded Mr. Lentz.”

Unfortunately for Mr. Lentz, the commission is unable to go back and time and stop the illegal knee from shattering his orbital bone:

“It’s the illegal knee that basically knocked Nik Lentz out so he could get his back and hook him,” Nelson told MMA Fighting on Monday evening. “I mean, he was clearly down. That knee broke Nik Lentz’s eye socket, so it was not a soft knee. He took his time, held the back of the head, wound up the knee and then let it go. …It was a super hard knee that ended up doing a lot of damage.”

Meanwhile, the matter isn’t over as far as Charles Oliveira’s camp is concerned:

“Yes, we’re going to appeal it, because it was an error made by the referee, that should have stopped the fight, given time for Lentz to recuperate, and taken a point away from Charles. Charles cannot pay for an error made by the referee that they themselves appointed. Our manager has already got in contact with the UFC and the Pennsylvania Commission to try to reverse this decision. We’re awaiting a new position on the matter.

Well, some crazy people might say that Charles made an error in throwing that blatantly illegal knee. Some might say he’s lucky he didn’t get DQ’d and a loss put on his record. But bravo to his camp for having the balls to go against these people with their crazy interpretations of reality. This injustice cannot prevail!

I would love to see a V-Log of Dana White getting that phone call from Oliveira’s manager. I could that verbal flaying end with the guy crying and Oliveira in line for food stamps.

  • Blackula Jonez says:

If only aloe vera could of waited a second longer for lentz to get both feet under him, if only.

  • Oontyex says:

situations like this are why one knee on the ground shouldnt be counted as a ‘downed opponent’ – to suggest that when lentz’s knee lifts up as he stands that the knee from olivera is less dangerous/sportsmanly/whatever is just a silly distinction

  • Letibleu says:

I knees were legal Lentz would have been protecting himself in that position and the barn burner of a fight would have continued to a more logical conclusion.

  • Blackula Jonez says:

knees on the ground would have forced lentz to either shoot for a takedown on one knee or he could of tried to pull guard or wait for a ref standup.

knees on the ground add an entire new dimension to mma, it turns a relatively safe position into a danger zone, the more danger zones in a fight the more exciting the sport will be as opposed to the more safe zones in a fight the more boring it will be.

  • fightlinker says:

Blackula knows where it’s at. Hoping knees to the ground are added back in or at least expanded upon to get rid of this one hand or one knee bullshit we always see.

  • DJ ThunderElbows says:

This is something I think we can all agree on.

  • CAP says:

How the hell does the ref miss that he was looking right at them. Ref FAIL.
