A non-pussy version of Wii Fit

The big technology push going on in video games right now is motion detection – since Nintendo managed to sell a Wii to every old person in the world on the basis of Wii Sports alone, Microsoft and Sony have been playing catchup and are finally releasing their own movement-based systems – XBox Kinect and PS3 Move. Amongst the games coming out for these gimmicky systems: a new UFC title called UFC Trainer:

Set for release January 1, 2011, UFC Trainer will be a more combative take on the fitness genre than the likes of Wii Fit or EA Sports Active. The game will be released for the Xbox 360 Kinect, the PlayStation 3 Move, and the Wii. THQ’s executive vice president of core gaming, Danny Bilson, apologized to analysts for the game’s absence from THQ’s E3 presence, but said the publisher doesn’t want to show it off until it’s the best training game on the market.

“We want this thing tuned to perfection without lag,” Bilson said. “And I’m not going to ship it until it’s the coolest fighting thing in the world.”

One site quotes THQ as saying “It has all the fighters, it has the official UFC trainers in it,” while another speculates on the possibility of some sort of first person fighting mode built in. I’m holding off on saying whether this is genius or retarded until I see how the game plays, but it’s cool to know THQ isn’t just content with pumping out an updated Undisputed title every year. Then again, considering the state of the company, they don’t exactly have the leeway to not squeeze every penny they can out of the deal. I wanna know when we get a UFC game that’s more Soulcalibur than simulation.
