As usual, Dana White is trying to raise interest in a UFC card by throwing around title shot talk. Now it’s Nog vs Velasquez that could lead to an ‘immediate title shot’. Of course, it’s only ‘immediate’ if the winner of the Mir / Carwin fight in March is too injured to fight Brock in July:
Despite an upcoming interim heavyweight title fight between top contenders Shane Carwin and Frank Mir at UFC 111 in March, White acknowledged that the winner of the featured contest between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cain Velasquez at UFC 110 might be next for returning UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar.
“Brock is back in the heavyweight division now,” White said. “He’s healthy, and he’s going to fight again. Mir and Carwin are going to fight for the interim title because that fight was already made before Brock said he was coming back.
“[Nogueira and Velasquez], the winner of this fight puts them right in the mix because something could happen to either Shane or Mir in that fight where they couldn’t fight Brock, so the winner of this fight would fight Brock.”
That’s a pretty massive if, but I suppose even though the Gypsy Curse has ended there’s still a larger than normal amount of injuries going around. It’s nice to know if Carwin or Mir pull a Belfort, we’ll have a Nog as backup. Or Velasquez, I suppose. But probably Nog. Just saying.
