No Welterweight Title defense at UFC79.

If I were to imagine how Dana White’s thanksgiving was going, I would have thought he was busy being thankful for UFC 79 having a solid lineup with not one but TWO high-caliber main events. He was probably thankful because UFC79 was going to wash the sour taste of UFC76 and 78 out of everyone’s mouths.

Of course imagination and reality are very different. Which is lucky for all women in the universe because in my imagination they are my sex slaves and I dominate them like a middle eastern warlord. As for Dana White’s shitty reality thanksgiving, he spent it being not very thankful that Matt Serra has just pulled out of his fight against Matt Hughes:

Serra will have to withdraw from the UFC 79 card on December 29th due to an injury sustained during training earlier this week.

The current UFC welterweight champion, who was scheduled to fight Matt Hughes on the year-end card, suffered a herniated disc in his lower back on Monday following a routine training session in his Long Island gym.

“This is devastating news because they were so looking forward to fighting each other,” said White. “Unfortunately injuries happen and I look forward to Serra recovering quickly, and to getting him back into the Octagon.”

Who knows what this means for the welterweight division … there hasn’t been a title defense since April and now it looks like things are on hold yet again, and God only knows for how fucking long. The interwebs are deepthroating a thousand and one names for who Hughes should fight instead of Serra, but I seriously doubt the UFC is going to risk fucking up all their TUF-related plans to stick Hughes in the ring against some random dude.

Sam Caplan thinks the UFC is gonna replace Hughes-Serra with another high profile match, and had this to say:

The UFC has been in this position before and have come through in the clutch so there’s no reason to think they won’t get creative and come up with a intriguing match to replace Hughes vs. Serra. However, due to the timing and limited availability of marquee names, they will no doubt be put to the test.

Uuuuh, there’s lots of reasons to think they won’t come through:

  • Chuck vs Keith
  • Rich vs Okami
  • Bisping vs Evans

Dana White spent a month leading up to UFC78 trying to convince people that Bisping/Evans was a legit main event. I have no doubt they’re just going to slide Wand vs Chuck up, add an interesting but by no means groundbreaking match between some game lightweights, and call it a day. It’s not like there’s anything ‘wrong’ with Chuck vs Wand as a main event. It just sucks because Hughes/Serra and Chuck/Wand was like a one two punch for me.

  • Lifer says:

serra just needs to man up.

  • TIGERTAO says:

I hope GSP steps up and pounds Hughes again, just to avenge the ringside laughter when he fought Serra…

    “Your heart is my Pinata.”

  • groda says:

Serra vs. Hughes was not interesting anyway so no big loss. The problem is that now it will probably take even longer until the ww division is normalized. This is fucked up because the division has been a fucking muppet show since Hughes vs. GSP II which was on nov. 18 2006. Dana needs to take his own life.

  • It’s almost to the point for these fighters to start having understudies for all their fights with all the injuries that take place.

    Bruce Buffer:
“And in the red corner, filling in for Matt Serra tonight due to injury, is JOOOOEEEEEY ‘the pussy-whipped bitch’ Scaaaaaaroooooooolaaaaaa”

Seriously – they should like have the matches regardless and if they can’t fight they have to have someone lined up as their replacement.

Then they could even have Tom Cruise movie about the UFC that’s like all the other Tom Cruise movies where he and his nemesis come together after a tragedy near the end of the movie and his nemesis says “I’ll be your fighter replacement anyday” (ie Top Gun, Days of Thunder, etc)

Dammit all to hell. You know this just going to put off the next GSP fight.

Gsp vs. Hughes or Hughes vs. Kos

  • The current status of all of UFC’s division makes Anderson Silva looks even more like a God:
    – LW division is put on hold thanks to Sherk and his gears, as well as the athletic comission delaying his hearing.
    – WW division is put on hold b/c of the TUF and now Serra’s herniated disc injury.
    – LHW division b/c of Rampage’s broken arm and dispute between Rampage’s camp and UFC’s management.
    – HW division b/c of Couture’s resignation

That’s 4 out of 5 UFC champs down. Only Anderson Silva fucking remains. He own being harmed from heavy injuries, UFC totalitarian contract dispute, and refrain from taking steroids just like he owned the middleweight contenderrs.

When did Sam Caplan become delusional? What examples can he provide of Zuffa EVER “coming through in the clutch?” If history shows us anything, its that Zuffa cards frequently go from compelling to crappy when the main event-ers get hurt. Does he not remember a bloated Joe Riggs desperately trying (and failing) to shed weight for a title shot against Hughes?

Also, is the fucked up UFC-belt picture going to force Zuffa into negotiations with Randy? Some one has to fight for a fucking belt at some point- and not counting the laughable “interim” contest between BJ & Stevenson, that point is going to be next March when the MW belt again goes on the line. 6 months between title fights, and its the same title. Ouch.

  • Haha, good one mate :-)

    Easy fix:

    Kimbo Slice vs. Tank

  • Mobb Deep says:

Fuck, this means the UFC won’t come to Canada untill this time next year.

  • Teufel says:

Did anyone honestly give a shit about this fight anyway? Hughes vs GSP 3 for UFC 79 with the winner getting the next title shot early next year makes sense, or even Hughes vs Fitch. Doubt it’ll happen though.

  • kermit_01 says:

Fitch says he won’t be in the Country that weekend, so unless his plans change no Fitch…and that would be about the only other fight I’d want to see. Serra-Hughs is a a fight I’ve personally been waiting to see. Mostly because it will answer the question “Was Serra that good, or that lucky”. Before 30 people reply he was lucky– let me just say you never know, so I’ll be interested to see the fight. If Serra can dispatch Hughs then Serra truly is that good.

I’m willing to bet we don’t see Hughs fight anyone at the top of the welterweight division. It’s likely to be someone like Thiago Alves, someone who can make it look good, but will likely get squashed by Hughes.

    Here we go…11/24/2007
St-Pierre Steps in for Serra, Faces Hughes for Interim Title at UFC 79 Thomas Gerbasi, UFC – In the UFC, when one door closes, another opens, and on December 29th, that adage will ring true once against when Matt Hughes battles Georges St-Pierre for the interim UFC Welterweight Championship in the main event of UFC 79: Nemesis, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

St-Pierre replaces UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra, who was forced to withdraw from his bout with Hughes last week due to a herniated disc in his back.

I wonder if that little bitch Joe Scarola will show up with his girlfriend. That is, if she hasn’t already dumped him.
