I’m really loving how everyone in MMA is going apeshit over Never Back Down. You honestly can’t go two threads in any forum without seeing someone freaking out about how this movie is bad for the sport and how it’s going to open the floodgate and unleash an endless amount of morons unto our ‘scene’. Hey people: Newsflash. MMA is already drowning under a sea of retards with bad attitude, bad tattoos and half a brain.
People need to stop looking at this flick as an “MMA” film, because while it’s ‘about’ MMA, it’s NOT an MMA film. You might as well be criticizing Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon for being an unrealistic representation of Kung Fu, for fuck’s sake. It’s not like “Never Back Down” is pretending to be something it isn’t (which is more than I can say for Redbelt – one armed fighting, anyone?). It’s very obvious that it’s a cheeseball popcorn flick, which is why all the reviews like this Sherdog one make me laugh:
“Never Back Down” is loud, ugly, brutal, amoral, immature — which all sounds awesome — but the film is bad for MMA. Only briefly touching on the importance of training as an end unto itself, a new audience will be introduced to MMA exactly as mainstream grandmothers see it now: dirty, seedy, sadistic and existing only to satisfy the whims of a subhuman bloodlust.
If you’re a Sherdogger, then you know MMA. If you know MMA, you’re qualified to judge “Never Back Down” differently than most. The problem for MMA fans is that we see real fights all the time. The allure of a cinematic version is simply to provide a deeper and more powerful story. Unfortunately, “Never Back Down” fails to provide anything as unique or interesting as real life.
Oh noes, this shitty film does not match the intense love hardcore fans feel for the sport of MMA. FAIL! Wait … that’s a stupid way to judge a movie. Me and Jake are hitting the thing up tonight, and we’ll report back to you if it lives up to the very clear promises it makes: violence, hot bitches, and uber-cheese.
