World Extreme Cagefighting today announced that for the first event of 2009, the cage will head west to the hotbed of mixed martial arts – California – to hold the first ever WEC event in San Diego. Two blockbuster matchups will lead the main card, with the World Lightweight Championship fight between Jamie Varner and undefeated Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone as the main event, and the mega-rematch pitting Urijah Faber against Jens Pulver in the co-main event. World Extreme Cagefighting, featuring Varner vs. Cerrone and Faber vs. Pulver 2, takes place live from the San Diego Sports Arena on Sunday, January 25, 2009.
The San Diego Sports Arena has a capacity of 16,000, but I’m sure the WEC will cut it in half or do something else to make it smaller. But still, I wonder how many people will go out on a Sunday for a fight that’s already happened. I suppose there’s a lot of Urijah Faber fans in Cali who are more than happy to watch Faber beat the tar out of whoever he’s put in front of, but will there be enough to fill this place up?
Remember: Sunday is God’s Day and everyone involved in the show is Sinning in God’s Eyes just by working. I don’t think attending a show would be considered working but it’s still encouraging others to sin and the Virgin Mary wouldn’t like that. We’ve alread pissed her off once with that Affliction shirt. Do we really want to push it with her?
