More on the GSP / Anderson Silva fight not happening

Georges St Pierre goes blah blah blah blah don’t expect me to fight Anderson Silva any time soon. Steve Cofield, god bless him, goads Georges by asking him straight up if he’s afraid to fight Anderson Silva:

“That’s not what I said. What I said is it’s a complete re-orientation of my career. People are saying crazy stuff, like “Oh, you just have to gain 30 pounds and take the fight and fight him in three months.” I can’t (gain) 30 pounds in three months. It would take a lot more than that. If I want to go up in weight class.”

“Plus, (Anderson) Silva fights at light heavyweight as well. So he walks around at … he’s probably 40 pounds heavier than I am (off season). So if I fight this fight, it might be at a catch weight. If it happens.”

“It’s something I’m not thinking about right now because it’s not my number one priority. I’ve had a lot of success at 170. If I move to 185, I need to talk to my sponsors, my trainers. It’s a complete change of life. Do I want to take the risk, maybe yes. Maybe It’s going to be a great challenge. Maybe, no. But I have to talk with my trainers. … I have to fight Jake Shields, I think Anderson Silva has to fight Yushin Okami.”

“I’m not afraid of nobody in the world. I’m a martial artist. If it happens [with] the right timing and everything, if it is how I want it, and how he wants it. I fight whoever they want. I can fight everyone in the world. I don’t mind.”

Just for reference, I don’t believe anyone thinks GSP is ‘afraid’ of Anderson Silva. But it’s hard to say he’s not afraid of losing, which of course is perfectly normal for an athlete who’s spent the last 4 years listening to people talk shit over that Matt Serra loss.

But I don’t buy the whole line of thinking that we as fans are doing something wrong by demanding this fight of him, and ignoring the Jake Shields fight as if it ain’t no big thing. Yeah, Jake Shields is a serious opponent. But we also know he’s got holes in his game you can fly a jumbo jet through.

We all know it’s Georges’ fight to lose, and that pretty much sums it up for every potential fight he’s got left at 170. Meanwhile, there’s kinda this once in a lifetime superfight between the world’s two best pound for pound fighters that could take the sport to the next level. But it’s wrong for us to ask this of Georges because Anderson is one whole weightclass up.

this is why fighter should not have rights

old man dana needs to get his belt and whip this little boy’s ass until he does what’s good for the sport whether he likes it or not

  • CAP says:

GSP is a yes man. And he will.

Funny how he brings up Okami. I kind of see Shields as his Okami. Both are boring fighters but still a threat. How asum would the ufc be with Okami and Shields holding straps. Dana might quit.

  • glassjawsh says:

best post you’ve written in a long time ryan. that’d be more impressive if you’d written anything in a long time

  • Mixed Martial Adam says:

Eventually there will be too much fan and company pressure for GSP not to move up. However, I agree that a catch-weight bought sounds like a better option for his first bump up in weight, expecially vs someone as big as Silva.

  • YEAH RIGHT says:

Sounds like Georges is just afraid. Like you said. Which really sucks, because he’s starting to act like a little bitch. This fight is bigger than you Georges! Take the damn fight. Make history. In 50 years no one will care who won, the fight just needs to happen.
GSP saying andy needs to fight Okami is pretty BS too. There will always be someone in the division they could be fighting, but those fights don’t matter. Anderson’s on the tail end of his career, don’t prolong the fight or else there will be an asterisk on it. At least if it happens now we can say they were both near their primes.

As for the weight issue–look at your boxing coaches prized possession. Pacquiao won his first belt at 112 pounds, and his last belt at 147. The dude barely weighs 140, GSP can take this fight.

  • Elfenstein says:

wtf sort of nonsense write up ?? anderson silva might be fighting one weight class above gsp – but he is not “just” one weight class up on a day to day basis.

  • Shibo says:

GSP has been very consistent from the very first time he was asked about this fight. He’s said that he’d want to move up a weight class permanently, and that he’d want to do it right, by gaining muscle and making sure he was able to fight effectively at the new weight. He’s said that ideally it would take up to a year. So he makes comments that pretty much state truthfully that he’d need to gain the wait over a longer period of time, and that it might need to be a catch weight fight if management wants the fight sooner, and all of a sudden, he’s a coward and this becomes a valid news story? What the hell is that? I’m not a huge GSP fan, I’d probably be rooting for Anderson. But still, I’ll call bullshit when I see it and there’s some serious bullshit if anyone thinks that GSP is being cowardly or ducking a fight. He’s just trying to do it right.

  • Take It Easy says:

then maybe he should nut up and say it clearly rather than being a wishy-washy cowardly little shit

  • Elfenstein says:

at all the trolls above – grow up.

  • iamphoenix says:

    no you grow up.

  • Elfenstein says:

    ..yes, i rest my case

  • kwagnuth says:

Personally I would rather see if Anderson’s got the balls to go up and fight John Jones if Jones beats Shogun anyway. Now that is an interesting fight.

  • Blackula Jonez says:

GSP fans are scared shitless they would give you a laundry list of reasons why it is nigh impossible for gsp to take a fight against a middleweight

But will toss Silva against his third light heavyweight opponent like they were taking out the trash.

Whats good for the goose is good for the gander. Nobody had a problem with GSP fighting BJ, now its Georges turn to go up and weight and become the undisputed #1 p4p fighter on the planet by handing a man with the longest winning streak in UFC history his first loss…and now going up in weight is a silly prospect for reckless irresponsible losers who are not being responsible with their careers.

And thats what fighting/combat sports/mma is all aboout, being responsible and carefull with your career.

  • Mixed Martial Adam says:

Kwagnuth – I believe Anderson has the balls to fight ANYONE and would more than likely wreck Jones in a five rounder. He’d have to worry about wrestling and top control, but Jones would have a hell of a time getting in close.

However, maybe Jones deserves a break after the schedule he’s had lately (assuming he wins the belt, which is a big IF) and it would be nice to see him defend his belt a few times first. Let’s just slow down a bit here until Jones shows the same magic against some seasoned LHW contenders as he has against Bonner, Matyushenko, Vera and the most inconsistent fighter at LHW – Ryan Bader. Shogun, Rampage, Machida and Evans are all at a whole other level than his previous oppostion. He should probably fight a few of them before welcoming Anderson up to unify the belts.

First off like I’ve said before, GSP is a avg sized WW while Silva would be a Huge LHW so it’s not just moving up a division as for the BJ thing BJ is a large LW or small WW and no one encouraged him to move up.

The real argument should be for Anderson to move up to LHW and fight Shogun,Jones, Rampage etc if he’s not too scared since he’s actually bigger then a lot of the LHWs already.

  • glassjawsh says:

i just wanna see good fights and after GSP beats shields there are no good fights left for him at WW.

  • Blackula Jonez says:

I get it Billy, GSP is a special fighter who can only fight champions from lower weight classes. Anderson is tall and should fight lhw because he is 6’2.

Good thing martial arts as a whole hasn’t taught us anything about smaller fighters using technique and skill to defeat larger opponents.

Will GSP fans at least own up to the hypocracy of lauding Georges wins over BJ as they continue to react with violent fear of a Silva superfight.

Rest assured, if GSP plays it safe and doesn’t take the fight history will not be kind to him.

  • Take It Easy says:

mixed martian adam believes anderson silva could beat a wrestler that cuts to light heavyweight in a fight

always knew you were a sherdog retard

  • Reverend Clint says:

BJ fought Lyoto machida who weighed in at 220 but GSP cant fight anderson silva

  • YEAH RIGHT says:

There’s no valid excuse for GSP not moving up in weight. There are countless examples of fighters going up in weight and having success. GSP doesn’t take risks, and that’s why he doesn’t want to fight Anderson.

“Silva would be a Huge LHW” Really? Silva would be an average/small LHW.

“The real argument should be for Anderson to move up to LHW and fight Shogun,Jones, Rampage etc if he’s not too scared since he’s actually bigger then a lot of the LHWs already.” First of all, i really don’t know why you think he’s that big, because he’s not. Secondly, and most importantly, the reason why people want to see GSP vs Andy is because they are fucking indisputably #1 and #2 P4P in all of MMA, ever! Jesus, you fucktard.

I swear to god. A situation like this happens once a century in combat sports and people are saying it shouldn’t….Fuckin’ A, are there any real MMA fans left in this sport?

  • Reverend Clint says:

Anderson is a pretty big MW but not a big LHW, puffy maybe

  • mamoru says:

They should just make the weight 175, pretty sure Anderson can still make that.
People like making a huge deal about how big he gets between fights, but that’s because he is fat and lazy deep down. It’s not like he’s ripped when he’s walking around at 220.

  • Billytk says:

Everyone always makes such a big deal out of what a HUGE lhw Forrest is and in that pic Anderson certainly looks relatively close in size and like he belongs in the same division
