Is EA’s MMA video game lineup lame because there’s not many interesting fighters available or because they’re filling it with too many ‘who gives a shit’ type guys from Strikeforce? The game originally sounded like it was trying to capture the overall MMA feel as best it could considering the UFC hasn’t just blackballed it, it’s blackballed anyone associated with it. But now it seems like they’ve really hitched their cart to the Strikeforce horse.
I mean … Mauro Ranallo and Frank Shamrock on commentary? And check out some of the guys making the roster: Jay Hieron. Nick Thompson. Tim Kennedy. Props to EA for being deep into the scene enough to know who those guys are, but who exactly is EA marketing to here? Who’s hyped to play as Josh Thomson? Simply put the fighter roster as it stands is about as exciting as getting to play Czech Extraliga teams in NHL 2009. An interesting thought for 7-8 seconds, then a big bag o’ who cares.
Strikeforce fighters Cung Le, Josh Thomson, Gilbert Melendez, Robbie Lawler, Scott Smith, Matt Lindland and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza will be playable characters in the upcoming MMA videogame release, “EA Sports MMA.”
Company officials unveiled the newest roster additions today.
The game, available on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms, is expected to be released in late summer 2010.
The fighters join an official roster that currently includes Randy Couture, Fedor Emelianenko, Jay Hieron, Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal, Jason “Mayhem” Miller, Gegard Mousasi, Brett Rogers, Frank Shamrock, Jake Shields, Renato “Babalu” Sobral and Nick Thompson.
Let’s all get down on our knees and pray that EA doesn’t half-ass it past Strikeforce crap so the game has a proper amount of scope. Get some of PRIDE guys in there (Sakuraba, Yoshida, Aoki), pick up some oldschool legends (Frye, Rutten, Gracie, Kimo), and if your programmers can figure it out, why not some freaks too (Choi, Zuluzhino, Sapp)? Because right now the roster is as boring as shit.
