More on the BJ Penn / Frankie Edgar fight

It’s all spoilers after the jump, man.

When it comes to judging standup battles, you don’t wanna listen to anything I have to say. So when I say I thought Edgar edged Penn out in rounds three, four, and five, that doesn’t mean all that much. So here’s the scorecards from some more reputable sites:

MMA Junkie
Round 1: 10-9 Penn
Round 2: 10-9 Penn
Round 3: 10-9 Edgar
Round 4: 10-9 Edgar
Round 5: 10-9 Edgar

Sherdog (specifically, J-Breen’s judging)
Round 1: 10-9 Penn
Round 2: 10-9 Penn
Round 3: 10-9 Penn
Round 4: 10-10
Round 5: 10-9 Edgar

MMAWeekly
Round 1: 10-9 Penn
Round 2: 10-9 Penn
Round 3: 10-9 Edgar
Round 4: 10-10
Round 5: 10-9 Edgar

Bloody Elbow
Round 1: 10-9 Penn
Round 2: 10-9 Penn
Round 3: 10-9 Edgar
Round 4: 10-9 Penn
Round 5: 10-9 Edgar

Of course, the only scores that really matter are the ones handed in by the ringside judges, and at least one of them was pretty whack: 50-45 for Frankie. Past that, anyone taking a hard line stance that BJ won and you’re an idiot for disagreeing is full of shit. Pretty much everyone not on BJ’s nuts agrees that most of the rounds could go either way. We’ll have to wait and see what one of those bean-counter stat sites has to say about things, but when it’s close like that it doesn’t surprise me when the round goes to the guy who was more active, and that guy was Frankie Edgar.

What interests me most though isn’t the scorecard, it’s what’s next for BJ and Frankie. It’s too bad governments move at such glacial speeds (actually, considering their usual incompetence, maybe that’s a good thing), because Frankie Edgar vs Gray Maynard in NYC would be pretty wicked. I wonder if Gray will fight again or they’ll just set an Edgar rematch up now. I’m sure some will be clamoring for an immediate BJ rematch, but the world at large isn’t going to give him much sympathy for getting edged out by a 7-1 underdog. For BJ, it’s all about whether he’ll stay at 155 to redeem himself or say fuck it and head to welterweight. Or retire. You just never know with BJ.
