MMA Fun Facts!

Trivia questions are all fun, but I find fun facts a lot better because they don’t make me feel all dumb. Here’s an awesome list of fun facts from Ultimate MMA. I’d give the guy more love but for that lame disclaimer at the top of his page to all the Sherdoggers. Dude, who gives a fuck what Sherdog forum users think. They’re SUB-HUMAN. They’re like … worse than the terrorists at Guantanamo Bay. In fact, if Mike Huckabee wins and he does Guantanamo times a hundred, then maybe we’ll have room for all those bastards. The Sherdoggers, not the terrorists.

Here’s some highlights from the list (SORRY SHERDOG ZOMG):

24. UFC Light Heavyweight contender Forrest Griffin’s very first MMA bout was against Dan “The Beast” Severn.

23. Evan Tanner has more triangle choke submission victories than anyone in MMA ever.

20. Rickson Gracie (claims to have won over 400 fights without a loss) the supposedly undefeated in all competitions has at least one loss from the 1993 U.S. Sambo Championships in Norman, Oklahoma, where he was defeated by American Ron Tripp by Total Victory via uchi-mata in 45 seconds. Rickson disputed this loss, claiming he was misinformed of the rules of the event.(props cavar)

13. The much discussed Fedor loss due to a cut against Tsuyoshi Kohsaka, was actually a cut reopened. Fedor suffered the cut in his fight with Ricardo Arona prior to fighting TK. Fedor still claims that TK used an illegal strike.

11. UFC Ring announcer Bruce Buffer has a Jiu Jitsu black belt and fought as a kick boxer.

7. Travis Fulton has an MMA record of 185-45-9 and of those fights only 20 went to decision, his nickname of “Ironman” is fitting.

2. Shooto is the oldest MMA organization on the planet. It started in 1985.(props cavar)

Haha… someone just made thread on Sherdog about your Gina post. I’m gonna start a thread on there about this post so they can rise up against you in righteous indigation. You’ll feel the wrath of the Sherdoggers before the day is over, FL. You can all us Sherdog, for we are maaany…

  • heh and I just made a post talking about how sherdoggers deserve to be locked up in guantanamo

  • Dukes says:

Shooto is an MMA Organization? I thought they were like Pancrase, with bitch slaps only and all kinds of other rules designed to make it look like a glorified wrestling/grappling match.

BTW, TK strike on Fedor that opened the cut WAS illegal according to the RINGS rules at the time.

  • DannyP72 says:

Yeah TK hit Fedor with an illegal elbow which caused the cut. The only reason it wasn’t deemed a NC or a loss for TK is that they needed someone to go forward in the tournament

  • Captain says:

I don’t see what the big deal is. He went for a punch but Fedor ducked into his elbow. I say a fight’s a fight and Fedor got opened up and couldn’t continue then tough cookies.

I am also very pro elbow. I don’t care if they stop fights. Like I said, a fight’s a fight. If an elbow opens a cut and the fighter can’t continue cause of the cut then he loses. Guess what? He probably would have lost in real life also cause he would have been blind in one eye.

  • kentyman says:

Elbows are great. Paul Daley knocking out Sam Morgan in EliteXC was an awesome example of how they don’t just cut people.

  • kentyman says:

And yes, TK was throwing an overhand right, not an elbow. Looks accidental to me.

  • Captain says:

Also, Anderson Silva’s elbow on Tony Fryklund. Elbows are fuckin awesome if you ask me.

  • kentyman says:

Yep. Unfortunately, those are the only clean elbow knockouts I could think of off the top of my head (that sounds like a pun, but I don’t know what it would mean if it was).

  • Captain says:

Maybe the only standing elbows. Ground and pound is another story. Off the top of my head:

Riggs knocked Kendall out cold with an elbow

Damacio Page did the same to dude on that Tapout episode

Tito’s elbows on Ken prettty much knocked him out

  • Atom says:

UFC 6: Varelans/Worsham (would definatly be illegal now)

Josh Burkman vs. Sam Morgan (but its listed as KO by slam)

Theres a really brutal KO from elbows at one of the early UFC’s but I cant remember who it was. I think it was a big black guy that was wearing a gi.. his opponent tried to take him down, ended up crucified, and then ate about 20 elbows to the grill at lightning speed.

  • Xavier says:

Elbows from all directions are fine by me. Rollins showed that they can even be effective from the back.

Nothing wrong with a little elbow, this isn’t “ultimate boxing” after all.

  • fightfan says:

    post 12………….

The big scary black guy with the gi was Gary “Big Daddy” Goodridge.

I remember watching that live. Those were brutal. Dude was out cold instantly, then sustained about 15 more elbows

  • Wu Tang says:

You forgot to add that Brad Imes has more gogoplatas submissions than anyone in MMA.

  • koolpaw says:

    >3 Dukes
    wrong and correct.
The origin of current SHOOTO was called ” shooting” started in Satoru Sayama`s SuperTiger Gym in 1884. The first event was not Pro, called ” Pre-shooting” in 1986. They had face gurad mask and shin guards with long Tights , still didnt use gloves at that time. Maybe u are talking about this First Pre-Shooting.

During several closed ” pre-shooting” matches, They started to use OFG and quited to use face masks. In 1989 Pro-Shooting has been started. Not the same with current MMA, but obviously it was the oldest organized MMA. The old Pro-Shooting rules were called ” General Rules”, when they imported Ground punch to face and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in 1995, new Rules with GnP were called ” Free-Style” for several months i remember.

did u know the original shooting used Octagon Ring?

  • Vess says:

Damn, Bruce Buffer has a blackbelt in juijitsu.
