For some inexplicable reason, Miguel Torres has been released by the UFC. Well, to be honest it’s not completely inexplicable. He has gone 3-4 since 2009 and lost two out of his last three fights. And even the wins were pretty terrible – the result of a shitty change in fighting styles that not only didn’t work very well, it actively turned off a large percentage of former Miguel Torres fans.
Still, it was barely a few years ago that Torres was being touted as one of the top pound for pound fighters in the world. He was the most popular guy in the WEC outside of Urijah Faber, and is still one of the best known bantamweights in the world. So with that in mind, why would the UFC let him go? Especially when they’ve been having serious problems putting together fights on PPV cards that the fans are interested in seeing? See: UFC 151.
Even worse, this puts an end to the possibility of another big fight we’ve all been bitching for since 2008: Urijah Faber vs Miguel Torres. Yes, that fight is far past it’s best before date. It would have been epic if we’d gotten to see the two duke it out when they were champs at the top of their weight division. But it’s still a fight that many of us would love to see, and the UFC shrugging and just cutting Torres loose makes me think they’re starting to lose the plot a little.
